Spartans Shock Kentucky with Hot Shooting in Champions Classic Upset

NEW YORK, NY – Look out, college basketball, because Michigan State just sent a serious message. The No. 17 Spartans absolutely torched the nets from beyond the arc Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, stunning the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats 83-66 in the Champions Classic opener. And frankly, it wasn't even that close.

Spartans Shock Wildcats: Michigan State Stuns Kent...

Before the game, if you told anyone Michigan State would win by double digits on the back of *eleven* three-pointers, they would have laughed you out of the building. Coming into the game, Coach Izzo’s squad was shooting a frigid 21.7% from three, one of the worst marks in the entire nation. But someone flipped a switch.

Kur Teng, who hadn't exactly been

Kur Teng, who hadn't exactly been lighting up the scoreboard, exploded for a career-high 15 points, sinking three crucial treys. Jaxon Kohler led all scorers with 20 points, including two from downtown, further fueling the Spartan surge. Even Trey Fort got in on the action, adding 13 points of his own.

Michigan State's ball movement was crisp, and their confidence seemed to grow with every swish. But it wasn't just the hot shooting that propelled them to victory. This was vintage Tom Izzo basketball – tough, physical, and relentless on the boards.

The Spartans dominated the glass, outrebounding Kentucky 42-28, creating second-chance opportunities that consistently translated into points. That inside-out game plan kept the Kentucky defense scrambling and allowed the Spartan shooters space to operate.

Kentucky, on the other hand, looked

Kentucky, on the other hand, looked lost after a quick 5-0 start. Their shots weren't falling, and they struggled to contain Michigan State’s suddenly potent offense. Otega Oweh led the Wildcats with a modest 12 points, but the team shot a dismal 27.6% from the field in the first half. You simply can't win that way against a team playing with the level of intensity Michigan State brought.

Coen Carr punctuated the victory with a highlight-reel alley-oop dunk early in the second half, sending the Spartan faithful into a frenzy. From that point on, Michigan State never looked back, consistently pushing the lead past 20 points in the closing minutes.

While Kentucky's Jaland Lowe remains sidelined with that unfortunate shoulder injury, the Spartans' win suggests they're figuring things out early. Whether this shooting performance is sustainable remains to be seen, but for one night, at least, Michigan State looked like a legitimate contender. Next up, they host Detroit Mercy on Friday. They'll need to carry this momentum forward. This win was impressive, but college basketball is a long season, and consistency is key.
