Ambassador Kang, who previously served as South Korea's Foreign Minister from 2017 to 2021, highlighted the ongoing uncertainty surrounding North Korea's willingness to return to the negotiating table. Despite this, she underscored Seoul's dedication to pursuing dialogue, reiterating President Lee Jae Myung's vision of South Korea acting as both a "peacemaker" and a "pacemaker" in the region. This echoes the sentiment expressed during President Lee's recent summit with US President Donald Trump, signifying a unified front in the pursuit of peace.

"While closely communicating with the U.S. side, (we) will continue (efforts) to secure support for our policy toward North Korea," Ambassador Kang stated, emphasizing the importance of a coordinated approach. She further elaborated that the South Korean government, in partnership with the United States, intends to actively cultivate conditions that would facilitate both inter-Korean dialogue and direct talks between North Korea and the US.
Acknowledging the "complex" and "uncertain" international environment, Ambassador Kang expressed a "heavy sense of responsibility" in implementing the Lee administration's "pragmatic" diplomatic strategy. She stressed that this approach is underpinned by a "robust" and "future-oriented" alliance with the United States.
The Ambassador highlighted the significance of the reciprocal visits between Presidents Lee and Trump within the first five months of the Lee administration. She pointed to the agreements reached on trade and security during these summits as evidence of a strengthened alliance and a "new starting point" for US-South Korea relations.
Ambassador Kang concluded by expressing her confidence that the established trust and shared commitment to cooperation between Presidents Lee and Trump will serve as a vital foundation for the continued development of the alliance, ultimately contributing to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. The renewed pledge underscores South Korea's commitment to a diplomatic solution, even amidst persistent challenges and uncertainties surrounding North Korea's intentions.
