Innsbruck, Austria – A chilling discovery in Innsbruck has led to the arrest of two brothers on suspicion of murdering a 34-year-old Syrian woman and her 10-year-old daughter, who had been missing for several months. The bodies were found concealed inside freezers hidden behind a drywall partition in the woman's apartment.

The grim find was made on Friday, triggering a wave of shock and grief across the region. The victims, whose names have been withheld in accordance with Austrian law, were reported missing on July 25, 2024, by the woman's cousin residing in Germany.

The investigation took a dark turn when police focused on a 55-year-old Austrian man, a colleague of the deceased woman, and his 53-year-old brother. Both were initially arrested in June. The older brother initially told police that an accident had occurred, vehemently denying any involvement in a murder. However, further investigation revealed a web of deceit and calculated planning.

According to authorities, the woman's colleague had initially claimed she had taken an extended trip to Turkey with her daughter to visit her parents. However, investigators found her mobile phone in her apartment, contradicting his statement. A witness also reported hearing a loud noise and cries of "mama" from the apartment on the day they are believed to have disappeared.

Further investigation uncovered suspicious financial transactions and a rented storage unit. Katja Tersch, head of the State Criminal Police Office in Tyrol, revealed that a freezer had been placed in the storage unit before the disappearance. The brothers then removed this freezer on the day the woman and child vanished, acquiring another one a week later, leading investigators to believe the deaths were premeditated.

The cause of death remains undetermined due to the advanced state of decomposition of the bodies. Public prosecutor Hansjörg Mayr stated that the bodies were professionally hidden and not discovered during a previous search of the apartment.

While both brothers were arrested in June, it was not until November 12th that the 55-year-old admitted to an incident and to concealing the bodies, while maintaining his innocence of murder. The younger brother admitted to a cover-up but denied any knowledge of a homicide. They are currently in pre-trial detention in separate prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg.

The case has sparked outrage and sorrow. Austria's Minister for Women Eva-Maria Holzleitner and Justice Minister Anna Sporrer released a joint statement condemning the "alleged double murder" as a horrific act of violence. The investigation is ongoing as authorities strive to piece together the exact sequence of events and bring justice to the victims.
