PUBG Creator Brendan Greene "Heartened" by Gamer Backlash Against AI

Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene, the mastermind behind the global phenomenon PUBG, has voiced his support for the growing resistance against the use of generative AI in video game development. In a recent interview, Greene expressed his enthusiasm for the community's stance, stating he's "really heartened to see the community revolt against AI stuff."

Greene's comments come amidst a rising tide of criticism directed at game studios incorporating AI-generated content. Many gamers are wary of the technology, arguing that it undermines the artistic integrity and human creativity that are fundamental to the gaming experience. Greene echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of artists in crafting compelling virtual worlds. "It's good to see that gamers go: 'No--if it's not built by artists, I don't want to see it,'" he said.

While Greene acknowledges the potential uses

While Greene acknowledges the potential uses of Large Language Models (LLMs), he clarifies that his independent studio, PlayerUnknown Productions (PP), isn't relying on them. Instead, PP is focused on developing tools that empower artists to shape their worlds more effectively. He likens the process to conducting an orchestra, where artists can manipulate various "levers" to quickly generate complex and detailed environments.

Despite being supported by Krafton, which is pivoting towards becoming an "AI-first" company, Greene assures that PP will maintain its artistic focus. The studio is engaged in technological research, including machine learning, but with the explicit goal of providing artists with the resources they need to create virtual worlds as part of their ambitious Project Artemis, a three-game plan.

The first game in this project, "Prologue: Go Wayback," an open-world survival experience, launched on November 20th in Steam Early Access. It serves as a showcase for terrain-level world generation and the studio's commitment to artist-driven creation. PP's second game will be a multiplayer shooter, and the third will build upon the technologies introduced in the first two, ultimately aiming to provide a platform for others to create and utilize similar technologies.

Greene's stance adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding AI in gaming, a debate that has recently engulfed titles like Arc Raiders, which has faced criticism despite strong sales. As the industry grapples with the potential and pitfalls of AI, Greene's support for artistic integrity resonates strongly with a growing segment of the gaming community.
