NFL Week 11: Broncos Upset Saves Sportsbooks from a Losing Sunday

The Kansas City Chiefs' continued struggles proved to be a financial windfall for sportsbooks across the nation this past weekend, offsetting otherwise lackluster results in NFL Week 11. While many games yielded relatively balanced outcomes for both bookmakers and bettors, the Broncos' surprising victory over the Chiefs prevented what could have been a losing day for many.

"It was kind of a forgettable day really. Win a little and move on to next week," commented John Murray, vice president of The SuperBook, reflecting the general sentiment before the Chiefs' stunning defeat. However, the Denver upset, coupled with the Seattle Seahawks covering their spread against the Los Angeles Rams, shifted the balance in favor of the books.

The Chiefs' Downfall: A Bookmaker's Delight

Kansas City entered their game against Denver as a 4-point favorite but ultimately fell 22-19, much to the delight of oddsmakers. "The Broncos knocking off the Chiefs saved us from a losing day," revealed Casey Degnon, risk manager at The SuperBook. Chris Andrews, sportsbook director at South Point, echoed this sentiment, stating that while a Chiefs victory by three points would have been ideal, the Broncos' outright win was still a favorable outcome.

The Chiefs' struggles extend beyond this single game. They now stand at a .500 record, trailing the Broncos by four games in the AFC West, and currently sit outside the playoff picture. Despite this, oddsmakers haven't entirely lost faith in Patrick Mahomes and his team. The Chiefs remain among the top five contenders in Super Bowl odds at most sportsbooks, highlighting the lingering belief in their potential.

Public Betting Splits: Ups and Downs

Beyond the Chiefs' debacle, the weekend presented a mixed bag for public bettors. Games involving the Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens proved detrimental to sportsbooks, as both teams were heavily favored in moneyline parlays. "The Packers and Ravens were no good for us. We needed one of those two to lose. The Bills were the worst, and the 49ers were no good, too," Murray explained. Conversely, the Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Carolina Panthers provided positive results for the books. The Packers defeated the Giants 27-20, and the Ravens edged out the Browns 23-16, though neither covered their respective spreads.
