South Carolina Claims Victory in "The Real SC" Showdown

No. 2 South Carolina asserted their dominance over No. 8 Southern California with a decisive 69-52 victory Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The highly anticipated matchup, playfully dubbed "The Real SC," saw the Gamecocks improve to 4-0 on the season, showcasing their strength and depth against a Trojan team missing a key player.

Joyce Edwards led the charge for South Carolina, delivering a double-double performance with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Raven Johnson and Tessa Johnson contributed significantly, each adding 14 points to the Gamecocks' tally. While Kennedy Smith topped the scoring for USC with 12 points, and Kara Dunn added 10, the Trojans struggled to find consistent offense, especially in the second half.

Gamecocks Dominate Second Half

The game remained close in the first half, with South Carolina holding a narrow 32-30 lead at the break. However, the Gamecocks came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 23-15. Edwards took over in the third, scoring 10 points, and Tessa Johnson added two crucial three-pointers to extend South Carolina's advantage. USC's offensive woes continued into the fourth quarter, where they managed a mere seven points, shooting just 1 of 14 from beyond the arc.

USC's Struggles

The Trojans' performance was hampered by several factors. The absence of star player JuJu Watkins, sidelined due to an ACL injury sustained in the NCAA Tournament, was keenly felt. Freshman Jazzy Davidson, coming off a strong performance against North Carolina State, struggled to find her rhythm, finishing with eight points on 4 of 11 shooting and committing four turnovers.

Furthermore, USC's rebounding struggles were evident, as they were outrebounded by a significant margin of 56-32. Madina Okot pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds for South Carolina, contributing to the Gamecocks' dominance on the boards.

Looking Ahead

South Carolina's victory marks their fourth consecutive win against Southern California, with coach Dawn Staley leading the Gamecocks to their third win in the series. The two teams are scheduled to face off again next November in South Carolina, continuing "The Real SC" rivalry. This win solidifies South Carolina's position as a top contender this season, while USC will look to regroup and improve as they await the return of their star player.
