Netflix Doubles Down on Franchise Potential, Promotes Teddy Biaselli to VP of Scripted Series
Netflix Taps Teddy Biaselli to Architect Blockbust...
Netflix is intensifying its focus on creating globally recognized franchises with the promotion of Teddy Biaselli to Vice President of Scripted Series. The move, announced today, signals a strategic shift towards developing and nurturing intellectual property (IP) with the potential to become long-lasting, tentpole franchises. Biaselli, a seasoned Netflix executive with 11 years at the company, will report to Michael Azzolino, VP of Drama Series Development.
Focusing on World-Building and Event Programming
Biaselli's new role expands upon his previous responsibilities as Director of Original Series, where he successfully curated a slate of Four Quadrant/IP Franchise series. His proven track record includes overseeing the development and production of several global hits, including the Addams Family spin-off *Wednesday*, the live-action adaptation of *One Piece*, *Avatar: The Last Airbender*, *The Umbrella Academy*, and *Sweet Tooth*. He is also overseeing the highly anticipated live-action *Scooby-Doo* series.
Building the Next *Stranger Things*
The core of Biaselli's mission is to identify and cultivate projects with the potential to rival the success of *Stranger Things*. This involves not only developing new shows based on pre-existing IP, like *Wednesday* and *Scooby-Doo*, but also identifying original concepts that can be molded into expansive, engaging worlds with lasting appeal. Netflix is clearly aiming to create properties that transcend individual seasons and generate merchandise, spin-offs, and a dedicated fanbase.
Biaselli's History of Success at Netflix
Before spearheading the franchise-driven initiative, Biaselli played a key role in shaping Netflix's family programming lineup. He oversaw the development of popular series such as *Fuller House*, *Lost in Space*, *A Series of Unfortunate Events*, and the critically acclaimed *Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance*. Notably, Biaselli was also instrumental in bringing *Cobra Kai*, originally developed for YouTube, to the Netflix platform, where it found a significantly larger audience and became a major success. Prior to joining Netflix in 2014, Biaselli held development executive positions at The Hub (a Hasbro/Discovery cable network) and Disney Channel, providing him with a diverse background in children's and family entertainment. His promotion reflects Netflix's confidence in his ability to identify and nurture projects with broad appeal and franchise potential in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape.
