Jim Avila, a seasoned journalist whose distinguished career spanned decades and included prominent roles at ABC News and NBC News, has passed away at the age of 69 after a prolonged illness. A Career Defined by Impactful Reporting

White House and Beyond

During his tenure as ABC News' White House correspondent from 2012 to 2016, Avila distinguished himself with his sharp questioning and commitment to holding power accountable. He earned the prestigious Merriman Smith Memorial Award from the White House Correspondents’ Association for his scoop on the historic reopening of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, a testament to his journalistic acumen and well-placed sources.

Before his time in Washington, Avila served as senior law and justice correspondent, covering major trials such as those involving Jerry Sandusky and Penn State, and the Michael Jackson case. He later transitioned to 20/20, focusing on justice and consumer investigations, and then to senior national correspondent based in Los Angeles. Even after leaving ABC News in 2021, Avila remained dedicated to his craft, joining KGTV-TV in San Diego, an ABC affiliate, as a senior investigative reporter in 2023.

Prior to joining ABC, Avila was a national correspondent for NBC News, covering the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and reporting from conflict zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.
