Subaru BRZ Gets Track-Inspired STI Treatment in Japan
BRZ Gets the STI Treatment: Subaru Unleashes Perfo...
Subaru is injecting fresh life into its beloved BRZ sports coupe with a limited-edition STI Sport Type RA (Record Attempt) model, exclusively for the Japanese market. Five years after the current generation's debut, this special edition boasts significant mechanical enhancements drawing inspiration from Subaru's racing endeavors. While not a full-blown STI, the Type RA offers a tantalizing glimpse into the performance potential of the BRZ platform. Production is limited to just 300 units, making it a highly sought-after collectible for Subaru enthusiasts.
Race-Bred Power and Precision
Under the hood, the BRZ STI Sport Type RA retains the familiar 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine. However, it's not just any 2.4-liter. This version, dubbed "FA24," is adapted from the BRZ CNF (carbon neutral fuel) race car that competes in the Super Taikyu Series. Subaru engineers have meticulously minimized weight and rotational balance tolerances for key engine components like pistons, connecting rods, the crankshaft, flywheel, and clutch cover. This meticulous attention to detail results in a race car-like engine feel characterized by low vibration and remarkably smooth acceleration. The goal is to deliver a more responsive and engaging driving experience.
Enhanced Handling and Style
Beyond the upgraded engine, the BRZ STI Sport Type RA receives a host of performance and aesthetic upgrades. It rides on 18-inch BBS wheels, available in either matte bronze or gray, paired with ZF dampers on both axles for improved handling and control. Gold-colored Brembo brakes provide enhanced stopping power, while a rear differential case, borrowed directly from the race car and complete with cooling fins, ensures optimal performance under demanding conditions.
Further sharpening the coupe's dynamics are various Subaru Tecnica International (STI) components. These include front and rear under spoilers for improved aerodynamics, a new muffler for a more aggressive exhaust note, and a stiffer sway bar for reduced body roll. Visually, the most striking change is the addition of a massive carbon fiber rear wing, adding a significant dose of motorsport-inspired aggression. Additional touches include a special engine plate, black door handles, and red stitching on the fabric seats, completing the unique aesthetic. Keeping purists in mind, the STI Sport Type RA is only available with a manual transmission, ensuring a truly organic and connected driving experience. This special edition BRZ is a testament to Subaru's commitment to performance and a treat for JDM enthusiasts.
