Valve Unveils Steam Powerhouse Trio: Console Chall...
Valve has dropped a bombshell, announcing a trio of new hardware products aimed at expanding the Steam ecosystem beyond the desktop and Steam Deck. The announcement includes the Steam Machine, a powerful console-like device; the Steam Frame, a streaming-focused VR headset; and a redesigned Steam Controller. All three devices are slated for release in early 2026.
Steam Machine: Bringing PC Gaming to the Living Room
The Steam Machine represents Valve's renewed push into the living room. This compact, cube-shaped device boasts performance six times greater than the Steam Deck, promising seamless access to your entire Steam library on your TV. Simply log in with your Steam account, and you're ready to play.
Power and Features
The Steam Machine is designed for 4K gaming at 60 FPS with FSR, powered by a semi-custom AMD desktop-class CPU and GPU. It will be available in 512GB and 2TB storage options, both expandable via microSD. Connectivity includes a Gigabit Ethernet port, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, one USB-C port, and four USB-A ports. It also features 2x2 Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Valve emphasizes the device's user-friendliness, highlighting its SteamOS, optimized for gaming with fast suspend/resume and cloud saves. The Steam Machine is designed to be quiet and cool, despite its powerful internals. An LED strip on the bottom provides system status updates, customizable with various colors and animations. Furthermore, the Steam Machine is still a PC, allowing users to install their own apps or operating systems.
Expanding the Steamverse: Steam Frame and Controller
Alongside the Steam Machine, Valve introduced the Steam Frame, a wireless VR headset designed primarily for streaming. This suggests a focus on leveraging existing PC hardware for processing, potentially making high-end VR experiences more accessible. While details are scarce, the Steam Frame will support both Steam VR and non-VR content.
The new Steam Controller appears inspired by the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, but retains the signature touchpads found on the Steam Deck. It will be fully configurable with Steam Input, making it compatible with PCs, laptops, the Steam Deck, the Steam Machine, and even the Steam Frame. The controller utilizes magnetic thumbsticks with TMR technology for improved feel and responsiveness. Valve will also include a "Steam Controller Puck" that acts as both a wireless transmitter and a magnetic charging station.
