Renault Revives Iconic Twingo as All-Electric City Car for 2026
The spirit of the 1990s is making a comeback, electrified. Renault has unveiled the highly anticipated all-electric Twingo, slated for a European launch in March 2026, breathing new life into the beloved city car with a retro-inspired design and modern technology. The announcement has sparked considerable excitement, particularly for those with fond memories of the original Twingo, a vehicle many remember as their first car.

The new Twingo Electric cleverly blends nostalgic design cues with contemporary aesthetics. Design elements harking back to the 1992 original include distinctive grilles on the hood and headlights that subtly nod to the past. Even the rear vent-type windows are a clever throwback. Practicality hasn't been sacrificed for style; the rear seats fold completely flat, offering a generous maximum trunk volume of 966 liters.

However, the Twingo Electric is far from a mere nostalgic rehash. Underneath its retro exterior lies a thoroughly modern powertrain. Powered by a 27.5 kWh LFP battery, the front-wheel-drive Twingo Electric boasts a WLTP-rated range of 263 kilometers. A 60 kW engine provides ample power for navigating urban environments.
While sharing the same platform as the upcoming Renault 5 and 4, the Twingo Electric differentiates itself in key areas. Notably, it features a unique power unit, foregoing the water-cooled electric motor used in its siblings in favor of a more cost-effective airflow-cooled battery system. In a further effort to keep costs down, the model will not include a heat pump.
Charging options include 11 kW AC charging and 50 kW DC fast charging, with the latter capable of replenishing the battery to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

Inside, the Twingo Electric features a standard 7-inch digital instrument display and a 10-inch touchscreen. While these screens are included even in the entry-level version, navigation will be an optional extra. The higher-spec "Techno" version comes fully equipped with all Google services.
Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the new Twingo Electric is its projected price point. Renault is aiming for a starting price of around 20,000 euros, making it a potentially compelling and accessible option for urban dwellers seeking an affordable and stylish electric vehicle. The Twingo Electric promises to be more than just a nostalgic trip; it's a practical and forward-thinking solution for the future of city driving.
