Under the terms of the agreement, Good Tree South Africa will be responsible for operating Genesis BBQ restaurants throughout the country, paying royalties to the Korean parent company. This strategic partnership leverages Good Tree's existing distribution network and understanding of the South African market, providing a strong foundation for Genesis BBQ's entry.
South Africa, with its population exceeding 63 million and a youthful median age of 28, presents a compelling opportunity for growth in the restaurant sector. Genesis BBQ highlighted the country's significant appetite for chicken as a key factor in its decision. Citing the 2024 SAPA Annual Report from the South African Poultry Association, the company noted that the average South African consumes a staggering 36 kilograms of chicken annually.
This figure represents over half of the total meat consumption per capita in the country, significantly exceeding the global average of 14.6 kilograms and even surpassing the 16.2 kilograms consumed by South Koreans themselves, according to data from Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. This robust demand for chicken positions Genesis BBQ favorably to capture a significant share of the South African fast-food market.
Good Tree South Africa plans to strategically launch Genesis BBQ restaurants in major urban centers, including Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Bloemfontein. The company anticipates that the unique flavors and high-quality ingredients that define Genesis BBQ's offerings will resonate with South African consumers, paving the way for a successful and sustained presence in the region. The expansion marks a significant milestone for Genesis BBQ, solidifying its position as a global player in the competitive fried chicken industry and opening doors to further opportunities across the African continent.
