Korea's Baseball Boss Plays it Safe with Star Pitchers Ahead of WBC

Tokyo, Japan – As Korea prepares to face off against rivals Japan in a pair of exhibition baseball games this weekend at the Tokyo Dome, national team manager Ryu Ji-hyun is adopting a cautious approach with his two prized right-handed pitchers, Won Tae-in and Moon Dong-ju. The decision underscores the importance Korea is placing on the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March.

Both Won, 25, of the Samsung Lions, and Moon, 21, of the Hanwha Eagles, are considered cornerstones of the Korean pitching staff. Moon, fresh off leading Korea to a gold medal at the Asian Games with a dominant performance against Chinese Taipei, and Won, a veteran of the national team with 10 appearances, are expected to play pivotal roles in Korea's WBC campaign.

However, neither pitcher featured in Korea's recent victories over the Czech Republic in Seoul, and their availability for the exhibition games against Japan remains uncertain. Ryu Ji-hyun emphasized the long-term perspective, stating, "The most important thing is to have our players in their best physical condition possible for the WBC next March. This is not the time to push them too hard."

Ryu's hesitation stems from the demanding KBO seasons both pitchers just concluded. Won enjoyed another stellar year, going 12-4 with a 3.24 ERA across 166 2/3 innings, followed by a significant postseason workload. Moon, too, posted career highs, winning 11 games and logging 121 regular season innings, plus additional postseason appearances.

The postseason, in particular, highlighted the potential strain on Moon. While he initially showcased his blistering fastball, reaching 161 kilometers per hour in relief, his velocity noticeably dipped in a later Korean Series start, leading to an early exit. Although the Eagles confirmed no injury, the national team staff is proceeding with caution.

"Both Won Tae-in and Moon Dong-ju

"Both Won Tae-in and Moon Dong-ju enjoyed great seasons this year and they are important pitchers for us. That's why we have to take the long view," Ryu explained, hinting that their participation against Japan will depend on their physical readiness. He promised to update reporters on their status.

With the WBC looming large, Ryu's measured approach signals a prioritization of long-term health and performance over immediate exhibition game results. The focus remains firmly on ensuring Won and Moon are at their peak when the stakes are highest next March. The Korean team will undoubtedly be hoping that this careful management will translate into success on the world stage.
