The controversy erupted after a prominent YouTuber, known as "Weird Sweets Shop" with over 1.5 million subscribers, posted a video detailing her negative experiences at the market. Titled "This makes me not want to visit Gwangjang Market again," the video, which has since garnered over 12 million views, highlighted issues ranging from allegedly unfriendly service and menu switching to concerns about food hygiene.

While the video touched on several vendors, one particular stall became the focal point of the backlash. The YouTuber claimed she ordered *sundae* (Korean blood sausage) listed at 8,000 won (approximately $5.90). However, she alleged the vendor demanded 10,000 won after adding meat to the dish without her consent. Despite stating she hadn't requested the addition, she was reportedly told to pay the inflated price.
The incident quickly spiraled into a heated debate. The vendor, in subsequent media interviews, refuted the YouTuber's claims, arguing the accusations were unfair. The YouTuber then issued a point-by-point rebuttal, further fueling the dispute and leaving many questioning the true sequence of events.
Recognizing the potential damage to the market's reputation, the Gwangjang Market Merchants' Association took swift action. After meetings with the Jongno District Office, they decided on the suspension, stating the incident had caused "significant public concern." According to the association, the vendor proactively requested the penalty and voluntarily closed the stall on December 10th.
Beyond the immediate suspension, the Jongno District Office is taking broader measures to address concerns about fair practices within the market. They announced plans to implement a "real-name system" for approximately 250 street stalls, aiming to increase transparency and accountability among vendors. This initiative seeks to restore consumer confidence and ensure a more positive experience for visitors to the iconic Gwangjang Market. The market, a popular tourist destination and local favorite, is now under pressure to address these concerns and maintain its reputation as a vibrant and trustworthy culinary hub.
