Istanbul – Galatasaray suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at home against Natura Dünyası Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Cup quarter-final, ending their hopes of retaining the trophy they won last year. The loss has sent ripples through the club, and manager Okan Buruk faced some tough questions after the match.
Okan Buruk STUNS Fans: What's REALLY Going on with...
Buruk didn’t mince words, calling the defeat "unexpected and upsetting, especially at home." He acknowledged the team's lackluster performance, particularly in the first half. "We changed nine players from the previous match, but so did our opponent. The problem was we couldn't create anything in the first half. We lost the ball too easily and struggled to push forward. Gençlerbirliği defended very well, and we needed to find a way to unlock them. We were too static," he said.
The manager noted a slight improvement in the second half, with Galatasaray creating some chances, but ultimately, the second goal for Gençlerbirliği proved too much to overcome. "We all are upset. We wanted to win the cup, we did it last year. This year we failed. It was a surprise defeat at home. We need to congratulate our opponent. They fought well, defended well, didn’t give us much of a chance, and capitalized on theirs."
Beyond the general disappointment, Buruk also addressed the boos directed at goalkeeper Günay Güvenç during and after the match. "This isn't the first time something like this has happened. These things can happen in matches like this. Sometimes it can happen to a player coming off. No one wants it. But the majority of our fans supported Günay. That support is what matters. He's a very important player for us, a key personality in the team. He’s always positive and shows leadership. He played every game in the cup run last year and has done well this year too."
Buruk took responsibility for the team's shortcomings. "Mistakes and misfortunes can happen, but it's wrong to single out Günay. If anyone is at fault, it's the coach. It's never right to evaluate a match solely based on individual players' performances. After the match, the fans called him over and supported him. We have a very important league match coming up, and this unity is crucial for us." It was a smart move by the coach to publicly defend his player. It's clear that Buruk is keen to deflect pressure from Güvenç and keep the focus on the team's overall performance, especially with a crucial league game on the horizon. Galatasaray will need that unity to bounce back from this cup exit.
