Hold your horses, Xbox gamers! Don't expect to see any Crimson Desert gameplay footage for the Xbox Series X or S before the game drops on March 19th. Yes, you read that right. With the launch just around the corner, Pearl Abyss, the folks behind this ambitious open-world action title, is keeping those cards close to their chest. And naturally, some Xbox owners are starting to feel a little uneasy.
Crimson Desert Fans in UPROAR! Xbox Gameplay MIA?!...
The main concern? Performance, of course. Will the Series S, the smaller and less powerful sibling, actually deliver a playable experience? According to specs released (but not showcased, mind you), the Series S is aiming for 40fps at a paltry 720p with ray tracing off in performance mode, and a not-so-smooth 30fps at 1080p, still without ray tracing, in quality mode. The Series X, naturally, is expected to fare better, potentially hitting 60fps in performance mode. But "expected" isn't the same as "seen," is it?
Interestingly, you'll need an internet connection for the initial setup, that oh-so-important day one patch, to make sure you're running the latest (and hopefully most optimized) version of the game. Once that's out of the way, Pearl Abyss says you can play offline. Good news for those with spotty internet, or just those who prefer to game in their own little bubble.
Now, for the tech geeks out there, Crimson Desert is packing some serious graphical firepower. On PC, we're talking FSR 3/4 and DLSS 4/4.5 support. PS5 Pro gets an upgraded PSSR, while the base PS5 and Xbox Series X/S get FSR 3. The PC version is going all out with AMD FSR Ray Regeneration and Nvidia DLSS Ray Reconstruction. But here's the kicker: frame generation (FSR, DLSS, MetalFX) is staying exclusive to PC/Mac. Sorry, console players!
So, why the radio silence on the Xbox front? Well, earlier this month, Pearl Abyss marketing chief Will Powers, clearly feeling the heat, urged fans to "let us cook." He promised to show off the console versions when they're good and ready. "We're not hiding anything, and I'm sick of having to repeat myself," he declared in a rather spirited (and relatable) rant. "I've repeated 100s of times that we'll reveal things ahead of launch to give people adequate time to still preorder the game for themselves. We're saying this openly... Let us cook? Please and thank you. /rant"
Look, I get it. Gamers are wary. But sometimes, a little patience is required. Maybe Pearl Abyss is genuinely working hard to optimize the game for Xbox. Maybe they're waiting for the perfect moment to showcase it. Or maybe... well, let's hope it's not the other thing. While we wait and see, check out IGN's final hands-on preview and our launch interview with Will Powers for a deeper dive. And remember, March 19th is right around the corner. Let's hope Pearl Abyss's cooking is worth the wait.
