JRPG Combat REIMAGINED?! Gamers are STUNNED by Bold New Direction!
Gaming News 15 March 2026

The JRPG landscape is about to look a whole lot different. If you're a fan of the genre, prepare yourself, because some major changes are on the horizon. From hotly anticipated titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Trails Through Daybreak to the inevitable (and hopefully awesome) Monster Hunter Stories 3, the future of Japanese role-playing games is actively being shaped.

JRPG Combat REIMAGINED?! Gamers are STUNNED by Bol...

Katsura Hashino, the director behind Metaphor: ReFantazio and the last three mainline Persona games, dropped some interesting insights at the G-Star 2025 Korean gaming conference. Hashino believes JRPGs are teetering on the edge of a major evolution, a point he calls "JRPG 3.0." He considers the golden oldies as generation 1.0, and our current era as 2.0. Intriguing, right?

The core of this evolution, according to Hashino, is a reimagining of combat mechanics. This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a shift that's rippling through the entire narrative rhythm of these games. Think about it: combat is so integral to how these stories are told, changing that foundation could have a massive impact. I remember as a kid playing the early Final Fantasy games, and the random encounters, while sometimes tedious, were also a core part of the experience.

Metaphor: ReFantazio, which launched in 2024, wasn't just a new IP for Studio Zero and Atlus; it also represented a subtle move away from the strict turn-based battling we've come to expect from the Persona series. Persona 3, 4, and 5 Royal were all staunchly turn-based, but Metaphor started to experiment a little.

Then there's Falcom's Trails Through Daybreak, with its hybrid combat system at the heart of the gameplay. Seamlessly switching between action and turn-based modes is key to unlocking character abilities, and exploiting enemy weaknesses by choosing physical or magical attacks. This hybrid approach, allowing a powerful initial attack after stunning, has been a mainstay in subsequent Trails games, including the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake. But here's the kicker: the hybrid system is often limited to regular enemy encounters. Story-critical battles? You're back to good old turn-based combat. So, a bit of a compromise, perhaps?

This design philosophy is popping up in other ways too. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, for example, shows enemies on the field, giving you the choice to fight or flee. And if your party is strong enough, you can just one-shot enemies right on the map. Similarly, in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, you can "speed up" encounters against weaker enemies by pressing both analog sticks, instantly winning. It's all about streamlining the experience and respecting the player's time.

Whether this fundamental change in the genre will come from these studios remains to be seen. Last year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 turned heads with its own take on hybrid turn-based, real-time combat. All of this points to the creative minds working hard to propel JRPGs into the future. It's up to us, the players, to see if this is truly the beginning of a cultural shift in one of gaming's oldest and most beloved genres.
