Okay, folks, let's talk Turtle Power! Wizards of the Coast has done it again, dropping another crossover bomb in the world of Magic: The Gathering. This time, it's not Transformers or Doctor Who, but the heroes in a half shell themselves: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! And honestly? I'm kinda digging it. As someone who grew up on Saturday morning cartoons and cardboard crack (that's MTG, for those unfamiliar), this feels like a perfect collision of nostalgia and strategic gameplay.
Turtle Power Unleashed! Why MTG's TMNT Deck Has Fa...
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Another crossover? Is this just a cash grab?" Maybe. But preconstructed Commander decks are a tricky beast. You have to weigh the playstyle, the value of the included cards, and how many cool new toys they've thrown in. And "Turtle Power" seems to be hitting all the right notes, at least on paper.
First off, let's talk value. I haven't had the chance to fully dive into gameplay just yet, but looking at the card list, there are some definite gems in here. Fabled Passage is always a welcome inclusion, and cards like Wave Goodbye, Assassin's Trophy, Vigor, and Steelbane Hydra? Those can get pretty pricey on the secondary market. Sure, their price might dip a bit once everyone gets their hands on the deck, but still a solid starting point.
But the real draw, for me anyway, is the sheer versatility this deck offers. Most precons give you a couple of Legendary creatures to swap in as your commander. "Turtle Power" takes it to eleven. You're getting six borderless foil commanders: each of the Turtles, Splinter, and a combined "Heroes in a Half Shell" card. That's insane!
That opens up so many possibilities. You can tailor the deck to your preferred playstyle, experiment with different card synergies, and even take advantage of the Partner mechanic for dual-commander strategies. Seriously, we're talking about 29 potential commander combinations! I'm already brainstorming different builds just looking at the list.
And it doesn't stop there. Cards like Baxter, Fly in the Ointment, granting flying to creatures with tokens, that's pure gold for certain deck archetypes. And Shredder? His life-total-reducing ability screams "Group Slug" strategy. Honestly, with a decent collection, you could potentially pull enough cards from this one precon to build *multiple* decks. That's a huge cost saving compared to dropping over $100 on one of those fancy Avatar Commander Bundles.
Of course, it's not all sunshine and pizza. The "Turtle Power" precon isn't perfect. The price tag, at $69.99, is definitely on the higher end, especially compared to some of the previous Commander decks (I'm still singing the praises of those Lorwyn precons!). And the power level might be a bit lower than some of the more recent, hyper-optimized decks we've seen. But, still, it looks pretty good.
So, what do you all think? Have you already pre-ordered "Turtle Power"? Are you on the fence? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I'm genuinely curious to see what everyone else thinks of this shell-shocking addition to the Magic universe!
