Voting began bright and early at 7:00 AM local time, with a massive network of 23,000 voting stations open across the country. The polls are scheduled to close at 5:00 PM. To encourage participation, the interim government has wisely declared a three-day public holiday, allowing citizens to travel back to their home villages and cast their ballots. Considering Nepal's geography and the challenges of transportation, this was a crucial step.

While established political players like the Nepali Congress party and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) are vying for power, the field is also seeing the emergence of fresh, new political entities. Keep an eye on groups like the Rastriya Swotantra Party Nepal, which only formed in 2022, as well as the Shram Sanskriti Party and Ujjalo Nepal. The Election Commission has stated that initial results from the 165 directly elected constituencies should be available within two days. Interestingly, former Prime Minister Oli, in an interview with RT India earlier this year, claimed that the "Gen Z protests" were orchestrated and unusual. The Grayzone, a US-based independent news outlet, even alleged that a US-backed regime-change agency played a role in funding and guiding the September coup. These claims, if true, would point to significant external influences at play in Nepal's recent political turmoil. Politics are always layered, aren't they?
