GENEVA – In a fiery statement delivered Tuesday, Iran's UN ambassador in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, didn't mince words, accusing the United States of making a "totally stupid decision" by launching attacks against Iran while delicate negotiations were supposedly still underway. Bahreini alleged this action constitutes a betrayal of diplomatic efforts, particularly those spearheaded by Gulf nations like Oman.

Bahreini was adamant that Iran holds no ill will towards its neighbors, stressing that they are considered friends. However, he drew a firm line in the sand regarding the presence of U.S. military bases in the region. As he put it, Tehran cannot simply stand idly by while these bases are used as staging grounds for attacks against Iranian territory. "War was not our option. War was imposed on Iran," Bahreini declared to a room full of UN correspondents.

The ambassador pointed to the indirect negotiations held in Geneva on February 26th, where Omani mediators apparently reported "significant progress" on Iran's nuclear program. He stated that optimism was high, and the U.S. delegation even "agreed to continue negotiations" this week in Vienna. This makes the sudden shift to military action all the more perplexing, and frankly, suspicious.

According to Bahreini, the blame lies squarely with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who he alleges convinced former U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon diplomacy altogether and initiate the attacks, starting last Saturday. "It was a totally stupid decision," he repeated, adding, "They will know in the future how stupid this decision has been. Both of them will understand, because Iran will firmly determine the situation and the destiny of this war." This is pretty strong language, even by diplomatic standards.

Adding fuel to the fire, Bahreini stated that Iran's neighbors feel deeply let down by the United States. "All our neighbours are now disappointed with the betrayal of the United States because everybody was working for diplomacy, particularly Oman," he said. This sense of betrayal could have serious ramifications for regional stability and the future of diplomatic efforts.

While Iran has launched strikes against countries hosting U.S. bases, Bahreini reframed these actions as self-defense, not reprisal. He reiterated that Iran's targets are "exclusively" U.S. military assets, with strict orders in place to avoid civilian casualties. "We cannot ignore the fact that the U.S. bases in their lands are operational against us. In no way can we allow those bases to be used to make military operations against Iran," he concluded. The situation remains highly volatile, and whether cooler heads can prevail remains to be seen.
