The rumor mill is churning, folks, and this one's a doozy. Word on the street, according to Bloomberg's sources, is that Sony has quietly pulled the plug on Bluepoint Games. Yes, that Bluepoint, the wizards behind the stunning remakes of "Shadow of the Colossus" and "Demon's Souls." Color me surprised.
Bluepoint SHUT DOWN?! Bloodborne Remake Dreams CRU...
Bluepoint, based out of Austin, Texas, was acquired by Sony back in 2021, seemingly solidifying their position as a key player in the PlayStation ecosystem. The expectation, at least from the outside, was that they'd continue their streak of breathing new life into classic titles. I mean, "Demon's Souls" on the PS5 was a technical marvel, right? But apparently, things behind the scenes were far more complicated.
The initial plan seemed to involve Bluepoint developing a live service game set within the "God of War" universe. Ambitious, to say the least. But that project was reportedly canned in 2025. Sony, publicly, stated they'd work closely with Bluepoint to chart a new course. However, this decision seems to have set in motion the events that led to the reported closure.
Here's where it gets interesting. After years of masterful remakes and supporting other studios, Bluepoint apparently had the itch to flex their creative muscles and develop their own original IPs. Fair enough, right? According to Bloomberg's reporting, they pitched Sony on an updated version of "Shadow of the Colossus" – a project they'd already famously remade. Sony apparently said no. Now, I know the remake was good, but remaking a remake? That's a tough sell.
Undeterred, Bluepoint then reportedly approached other PlayStation Studios with spinoff ideas, including a game set in the world of "Ghost of Tsushima." Imagine that! But alas, these pitches also failed to gain traction. Bloomberg suggests that other Sony-owned studios, facing their own pressures, were reluctant to commit resources to a project from another team. It's a cutthroat industry, after all, even within the same family. Perhaps the competition for resources was too high, and no one wanted to share the pie. Ultimately, the dream of original IPs seems to have eluded Bluepoint.
If this news is accurate, it's a sad end for a studio that consistently delivered high-quality work. While Sony hasn't confirmed anything, the silence is often deafening. It begs the question: what's next for the talented developers who called Bluepoint home? And what does this mean for Sony's strategy regarding remakes and studio autonomy within the PlayStation empire? Only time will tell. In the meantime, I'm going to fire up "Demon's Souls" and reminisce about what could have been.
