Murcia's self-proclaimed nerds reveled in a weekend of fandom as the 11th annual Winter Freak Show took over Torre Pacheco. The sprawling celebration of manga, gaming, and all things geeky, held at the IFEPA event venue, proved to be a major draw. Thousands of artists, cosplayers, comic enthusiasts, gamers, and anime aficionados alike made the pilgrimage.

And what a sight it was! The two-day spectacle boasted over 200 activities and appearances by special guests. These guests truly engaged with the fans, creating an electric atmosphere throughout the event. The Winter Freak Show’s program was carefully curated to cater to the diverse, and sometimes very specific, interests within nerd culture. Manga, anime, video games, film, television, pop culture, comics, and even Korean pop music were all represented. Something for everyone, really.

Torre Pacheco was completely transformed into Murcia's epicenter for alternative culture. The event attracted a vibrant mix of die-hard fans, up-and-coming content creators, and just plain curious visitors who wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Among the special guests this year were some seriously impressive names. Javier Balas, the voice actor behind Naruto and Brock from Pokémon, drew huge crowds. Eduardo Bosch, the Spanish voice of Jon Snow in *Game of Thrones*, also made an appearance. And then there were the talented voice actresses Lourdes Montes, Blanca Hualde, and Claudia Caneda, known for their work on the Netflix hit *K-Pop Demon Hunters*. I overheard several people absolutely geeking out over meeting them – myself included, I might add!

Adding to the event's prestige, the Winter Freak Show's cosplay competition serves as an official qualifier for the World Cosplay Championship in Bucheon, South Korea. It's one of the few Spanish events with a direct link to this global competition. That’s a huge deal for the cosplay community here. Attendees also indulged in some serious gaming at the convention's expansive video game and board game areas, which offered over 1,000 square meters of space. That's larger than my apartment, easily!

A bustling shopping area and Artists' Alley proved to be major attractions. Talented illustrators and artisans were selling their creations, including prints, stickers, buttons, and handmade crafts. The sheer creativity on display was inspiring, and the selection of pop culture-inspired goodies was impressive. It was nearly impossible to leave empty-handed.

Last year's Winter Freak Show drew over 14,000 attendees, and this year seemed even bigger. It has solidified its position as a leading cultural and entertainment event for young people nationwide and the premier manga event in the region. José Luis Giménez, Technical Director of the event, stated, "Each year Winter Freak grows in scope and quality; this 2026 we reaffirm our commitment to local and national talent, giving space to both emerging artists and established creators." And from what I saw, they certainly delivered on that promise.
