Nintendo's showing no signs of slowing down, folks. Just when you thought they might be resting on their laurels after a pretty solid start to the year – driven in no small part by the hype surrounding the upcoming Pokémon Pokopia (seriously, my nephew is already counting down the days) – they've dropped a surprise announcement: a brand new Indie World showcase. And it's happening *this* week!
Nintendo Indie World SHOCK! Is This Our First Swit...
It seems Nintendo's keen to keep the indie game train rolling, and honestly, who can blame them? Some of the Switch's best games have come from the indie scene. Think about it: *Hollow Knight*, *Stardew Valley*, *Celeste* – all indie darlings that found a massive audience on Nintendo's handheld hybrid. So, yeah, more indie goodness is definitely welcome.
The official word from Nintendo is that the Indie World presentation will feature "roughly 15 minutes of news and updates on indie games coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch." Notice that little "2" in there after Switch. Makes you wonder what they are going to be cooking up for the new version. The showcase is slated for tomorrow, March 3rd, so mark your calendars! Given the explicit mention of both consoles, this showcase could be a major one to watch.
Now, before everyone gets *too* excited and starts dreaming of a surprise *Metroid Prime 4* update hidden within the stream, it's important to remember the "indie" part of Indie World. This showcase is all about celebrating the smaller studios and their unique creations. While a surprise collaboration with a well-known indie developer isn't entirely out of the question – Nintendo has been known to pull a rabbit out of its hat from time to time – the main focus will undoubtedly be on highlighting the next wave of indie hits heading to the Switch and its successor.
So, set your alarms (especially if you're on the West Coast!). The stream kicks off at 6am PT / 9am ET / 2pm GMT. Nintendo even tweeted out a reminder: "Tune in tomorrow, March 3 at 6am PT for a new #IndieWorld Showcase!" That's a direct quote, by the way. I'll be tuning in, coffee in hand, ready to see what hidden gems Nintendo and the indie community have in store for us. Hopefully, we'll get a glimpse of some innovative gameplay, some charming art styles, and maybe even a few surprises along the way. After all, that's what makes Indie World so exciting, isn't it?
