Commander, or EDH as many players affectionately call it, is arguably the most popular format in Magic: The Gathering right now. It's a multiplayer format where players build decks around a legendary creature, their Commander, and battle it out in epic, often hours-long, games. Wizards of the Coast jumped on the Commander bandwagon years ago, releasing preconstructed decks (precons) designed to be playable right out of the box. But some precons are just... better. More powerful. More likely to crush your opponents. So, let's dive into some of the most formidable Commander precons ever released.
MTG Commander Power Ranking SHOCKS Fans! You Won't...
Now, before we get started, a quick disclaimer: power level is subjective. What works in one playgroup might not fly in another. This list isn't about "best" in a definitive sense, but rather highlights precons that have consistently proven to be strong contenders in the Commander arena. It's also not ranked in any particular order, because ranking these is an exercise in madness! Let's just say they are all awesome. Let me know what you think of my list, though! I always enjoy hearing what I got wrong.
First up, we have **Heavenly Inferno**. This deck, led by Kaalia of the Vast, is a classic for a reason. Kaalia lets you cheat Angels, Demons, and Dragons directly into play. That’s *huge*. The versatility alone makes it a winner. It's easy to swap components out to specialize into one of those creature types, or mix and match. A very aggressive deck, it can quickly snowball out of control, leaving opponents scrambling.
On the other end of the spectrum, there's **Guided by Nature**. Mono-color decks can sometimes struggle in Commander, but this mono-green powerhouse, fronted by Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury, defies expectations. It's all about creating a massive army of creatures buffed with +1/+1 counters. Overrun effects become absolutely devastating, and frankly, you never have too many +1/+1 counters. Trust me.
For something a little darker, we have **Necron Dynasties**. This Warhammer 40,000 themed deck is brutally efficient. With Szarekh, the Silent King at the helm (though some prefer Imotekh the Stormlord), the deck focuses on milling cards to fuel reanimation strategies and overwhelming opponents with hordes of robotic warriors. The recursion is relentless, and the token generation with Imotekh can be surprisingly potent.
Then there’s the mischievous **Mothman's Nightmares**. This deck is just downright annoying to play against – in the best way possible! The Wise Mothman is the star, dishing out "rad counters" that mill your opponents and deal damage. Watching your opponents squirm as their libraries dwindle and their life totals plummet is… satisfying, to say the least. It's a grind, but it's an effective one.
Moving on, we have **Endless Punishment**. This deck is a burn machine. It hits hard and fast, sometimes halving the length of a Commander game. While Valgavoth, Blood Baron is a solid commander, many players prefer swapping in Master of Pain for a different flavor. Master of Pain prevents life gain and punishes opponents for casting spells. Ouch!
Finally, let’s not forget **Sliver Swarm**, a five-color monstrosity that spreads like a plague. Led by Sliver Gravemother, this deck brings back creatures from your graveyard as attacking tokens, including multiple copies of legendary creatures. As the slivers stack, it’s hard to stop the onslaught. Then there’s **Eldrazi Incursion**, another five-color behemoth. Though it is solid initially, it becomes truly vile with upgrades. Players can also use Morophon the Boundless to make Eldrazi spells cheaper. This list could go on and on. But I need to stop somewhere...
