Ford is diving headfirst into the electric era, and the new all-electric Explorer is a testament to their commitment. In an interesting move, Ford is leveraging Volkswagen's MEB platform (the same one underpinning the ID.4, for example) to revitalize its European lineup, and the Explorer is the latest beneficiary. This week, we're asking the big question: Why should you buy one?
Ford Explorer Goes Electric! Is This the End of Ga...
Now, I know what you're thinking: a Ford built on VW bones? Sounds a bit strange, right? But trust me, Ford has done a solid job of imbuing the Explorer with its own distinct design language. It definitely doesn't scream "German engineering" at first glance. The overall presence is undeniably Ford – robust, muscular, and with a definite nod to classic American SUV styling. I particularly like the vertical LED headlights; they give it a modern yet familiar face. Plus, the aerodynamic wheels and sleek roofline suggest they've put some thought into efficiency. It’s a handsome machine, I’ll give them that.
The Explorer comes in three configurations, and this is where things get a little interesting. The base model is rear-wheel drive and features a 52 kWh battery, delivering around 170 horsepower and a WLTP-estimated range of 378 kilometers. That's…okay, I suppose, for shorter commutes and city driving. The "Premium" version we got to test drive also uses the 52 kWh battery and the same power output as the base model. So, realistically, you're probably looking at this one if you want some extra features without necessarily needing more range. The real star of the show is the top-tier Premium package with the larger 79 kWh battery. That bumps the range up to a much more respectable 529 km, and the power jumps to a combined 340 horsepower and a hefty 679 Nm of torque. That's enough to get you moving!
My initial impression? Ford has managed to create a compelling electric SUV that blends familiar Ford styling with reliable VW underpinnings. Whether the entry-level model offers enough range for your needs is a question only you can answer. But the top-tier Explorer, with its extended range and potent performance, certainly positions itself as a serious contender in the electric SUV market. Time will tell how it performs in real-world conditions, but on paper, it looks promising. Stay tuned for our full review, where we'll delve deeper into its handling, comfort, and overall value proposition. In the meantime, happy driving!
