Hiker's Cliffside Rescue: Near-Death Fall at Ifach?!
Current Affairs 28 February 2026

A Friday hike near the summit of Calpe's iconic Peñón de Ifach turned into a nightmare for a 52-year-old woman, necessitating a dramatic Helicopter rescue. The hiker suffered a serious leg injury, suspected to be a broken tibia and fibula, while navigating the challenging terrain.

Hiker's Cliffside Rescue: Near-Death Fall at Ifach...

The call for help triggered a swift response from local emergency services. The specialist Alpha 01 rescue helicopter was dispatched, working in tandem with the Mountain Rescue Group (Grupo Especial de Rescate). These skilled rescuers managed to locate the injured woman on a particularly tricky ledge. It's always impressive to see these teams in action; they really are the best of the best.

Once the woman was located, rescuers descended to provide immediate medical attention. They carefully splinted her injured leg, stabilizing it for the upcoming extraction. The next step involved the delicate operation of winching her into the helicopter. Getting someone safely on board in such conditions requires incredible precision and teamwork.

The helicopter then transported the injured hiker to a designated helipad near the base of the Peñón. A Basic Life Support ambulance crew was waiting there, ready to provide further medical assistance and transfer her to a hospital for definitive care. The entire rescue operation, from initial call to handover to the ambulance, was efficiently completed by 1:03 p.m. Authorities confirmed the woman's injuries were significant, but emphasized that the rapid response likely prevented further complications. Thankfully, no other hikers were reported injured during the incident.

Sadly, this isn't an isolated incident. The Peñón de Ifach, while breathtakingly beautiful, has seen a rise in rescue operations in recent years. Just last November, a 24-year-old hiker required airlifting after dislocating her shoulder near the summit. She'd reportedly slipped off the marked trail. I remember covering that story, and it highlights the inherent risks of this seemingly accessible natural park.

Local officials are constantly reminding visitors that the Peñón, despite its popularity, is a demanding environment. The steep slopes, loose rocks, and exposed paths demand respect and proper preparation. It’s simply not suitable for inexperienced hikers or those without appropriate footwear and a sufficient supply of water. You really need to take it seriously.

Rescue teams are urging anyone considering hiking the Peñón de Ifach to thoroughly research the route beforehand. Checking weather conditions is crucial, as is carrying a fully charged mobile phone. And perhaps most importantly, always inform someone of your planned itinerary before you set off. A little preparation can make all the difference between a memorable hike and a potentially life-threatening situation.
