Spanish drivers, take note! The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), Spain's traffic authority, has just switched on 33 new Speed cameras across the country as of today, February 27th. This is a clear signal that they're serious about cracking down on speeding and improving road safety. Of course, whether anyone can actually *reach* excessive speeds on some of these roads after the recent storms is another matter entirely!
33 New Speed Cameras on Spanish Roads?! Are YOU on...
The latest additions include a mix of 20 fixed Speed cameras, which clock your speed at a specific point, and 13 average speed traps, which measure your average speed over a longer distance. They're spread out across eleven autonomous communities, so pretty much everyone is affected: Andalucia, Aragon, Asturias, Canarias, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Comunidad Valenciana, Comunidad de Madrid, Galicia, and Murcia.
Now, here's the good news: the DGT is offering a grace period. For the entire month of March 2026, if you're caught exceeding the speed limit by one of these new cameras, you'll receive an informational warning letter instead of a fine. Consider it a friendly reminder to check your speedometer! But don't get complacent; after March, it's business as usual with standard penalties applying. I remember when they introduced the V16 beacons and promised a grace period... some drivers got fined anyway, so I'd suggest sticking to the speed limit!
To find out exactly where these new cameras are located, and to stay updated on any future additions or roadworks, you can visit the DGT's official website at www.dgt.es. They have a dedicated page with downloadable lists that are periodically updated, as well as an interactive map. It's worth checking regularly, especially if you do a lot of driving.
The DGT's message is clear: keep an eye on your speed. And frankly, they're not wrong. As someone who's lived here for over 25 years, I've seen firsthand how speeding can lead to accidents. Plus, let's be honest, the fines are no joke. I suspect these cameras are quickly paying for themselves given the number of people getting caught out. So, drive safely, everyone, and avoid those hefty fines!
