Fenerbahçe Wins! But a Shocking Exit Still Rocks Europe League!
Sports 26 February 2026

Fenerbahçe may have walked away from The City Ground with a 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest, but the celebrations were muted, to say the least. The Turkish side's valiant effort in the second leg of their Europa League playoff tie wasn't enough to overturn the hefty 3-0 defeat suffered in the first match. So, despite the win, it’s curtains for Fenerbahçe in this year's competition. Sometimes, a win just isn't enough.

Fenerbahçe Wins! But a Shocking Exit Still Rocks E...

Kerem Aktürkoğlu was the hero of the hour, bagging both goals for Fenerbahçe in the 22nd and 49th minutes. The young forward certainly put in a shift, showing composure and clinical finishing. However, Hudson-Odoi's goal for Nottingham Forest in the 68th minute proved to be the dagger, effectively ending any realistic hope of a Fenerbahçe comeback. Football, eh? Always a twist.

The match started with Nottingham Forest looking comfortable, controlling possession in the early stages. Anderson made a darting run in the 12th minute, driving towards the byline on the left, but his cross was effectively dealt with by the Fenerbahçe defense. Then came the breakthrough. A cross from Cherif on the right was poorly cleared by Williams, and Aktürkoğlu pounced, coolly slotting the ball past Ortega in the Nottingham Forest goal. Suddenly, there was a glimmer of hope for the visitors.

Almost immediately, Nottingham Forest looked to respond. Anderson again found himself in a promising position in the 24th minute, but his shot from a tight angle agonizingly went wide of the post. Fenerbahçe held on, though, and went into the halftime break with a slender 1-0 lead. They needed more, though, if they wanted to advance.

The second half started with a bang. Just minutes after the restart, Aktürkoğlu was brought down in the box by Morato, and the referee didn't hesitate to point to the spot. Aktürkoğlu dusted himself off and confidently dispatched the penalty, doubling Fenerbahçe's lead and sending a ripple of excitement through the away fans. Could they actually pull it off?

However, Nottingham Forest weren't about to roll over. Goalkeeper Tarık was called into action in the 50th minute, denying Cunha after a defensive lapse by Fenerbahçe. Then, in the 68th minute, Hudson-Odoi received the ball on the left, cut inside, and unleashed a low, powerful shot that nestled in the far corner of the net. It was a killer blow, silencing the Fenerbahçe faithful.

Tarık continued to be busy, denying Jesus in the 79th minute and making a late save from Hudson-Odoi to preserve the 2-1 scoreline. Ultimately, though, it was all in vain. Fenerbahçe's Europa League journey ends here. They can hold their heads high after a spirited performance, but the damage was done in that first leg. Back to the drawing board, I suppose, and focus on the domestic league.
