Porsche's V8 SUV is BACK! What This Means For Luxury Car Lovers!

Okay, so remember all that buzz about Porsche going full-throttle electric in the near future? Well, it seems like those plans are getting a bit of a…readjustment. Word on the street – and by street, I mean Autocar, who are usually pretty reliable – is that Porsche is pumping the brakes on its all-electric SUV aspirations, at least for the upcoming "K1" flagship model.

Apparently, demand for EVs isn't quite living up to the hype, especially stateside. We’ve been seeing this trend across the board, with some manufacturers slowing down production or delaying releases. So, what does this mean for the K1? Instead of being built on Volkswagen Group’s all-electric Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), it’s now reportedly switching over to the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. In plain English: expect gasoline engines under the hood.

Motor1's renderings of the Audi Q9 K1 give us a peek at what might be in store. Think five- or seven-seat configurations coupled with the option for traditional gas engines and potentially plug-in hybrids. Now, that doesn't exactly scream "future of electric," does it? But hey, flexibility is the name of the game in this rapidly evolving market.

And speaking of engines, the rumors suggest we'll see Porsche’s tried-and-true 3.0-liter V6 and the beefy 4.0-liter V8 making an appearance. Power figures are expected to be in the Cayenne range, which translates to somewhere between a respectable 350 horsepower and a truly grin-inducing 730 horsepower, depending on the specific configuration, of course. Sounds like fun, right?

This shift isn’t totally out of the blue. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume hinted at this back in September, saying that embracing internal combustion engines for the K1 better reflects “new market realities and changing customer demands.” Seems like they're listening to what customers actually want. Interestingly, they haven’t completely ruled out a fully electric version down the road, so who knows? Maybe we'll see an electric variant in the future. The Porsche K1 is expected to debut about a year after Audi unveils the Q9 (late 2026), with both being built in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Cayenne EV. The future, as they say, is complicated. And sometimes, it runs on gasoline.
