Europe's EV Revolution! 1 in 5 Cars Sold Electric – What's Next?!
Automotive 26 February 2026

Europe is electrifying, folks. And faster than you might think. New data shows that Electric vehicles (EVs) grabbed nearly 20% of the market share in Europe this past January. That's right, almost one in every five new cars sold was fully electric, showing that the EV revolution isn't slowing down, despite some political maneuvering around those pesky internal combustion engine (ICE) bans.

Europe's EV Revolution! 1 in 5 Cars Sold Electric ...

Now, you might have heard rumblings that automakers will still be allowed to sell ICE vehicles beyond 2035. And that's true, the EU softened its stance a bit. But let's be real: if EV adoption keeps up this pace, who's going to want a gas guzzler anyway? According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), battery Electric vehicles accounted for a solid 19.7% of all new car sales in Europe during January. When we say "Europe," we're talking about the EU27 plus the UK and the EFTA gang (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). Not the *entire* continent, granted, but it's still a huge chunk of the market.

Just a year ago, back in January 2025, EVs held a 16.7% slice of the sales pie. Now they've busted through the 20% barrier! And this is *before* the arrival of those new, budget-friendly models everyone's been buzzing about. Think the Renault Twingo E-Tech, the Volkswagen ID.Polo... and let's not forget the Chinese automakers who are gearing up to make a serious splash. Things are about to get even more interesting.

But what about the other powertrains? Well, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) grabbed 10.4% of the market in January, while diesel sales continued their downward spiral, hitting a low of just 7.2%. Hybrids are still the king of the hill, though, snagging a whopping 38.5% share. Pure gasoline cars? They're fading, landing at 22.5%.

So, who's leading the charge (pun intended!)? Preliminary data from Dataforce (via Automotive News Europe) says VW is still the EV sales champ in Europe. They moved 17,230 units in January, with the ID.3 leading the pack at 5,417 sales. The ID.4 and ID.7 were neck and neck for second place. Renault took second place overall, with a significant portion of their sales attributed to the 5 E-Tech. And Skoda, also under the VW umbrella, grabbed the last podium spot, largely thanks to the Elroq. It's a dynamic market, and it's only going to get more competitive from here. As someone who's been covering this industry for years, I can tell you: the future is electric, and it's arriving faster than we anticipated.
