Ex-Ukrainian Advisor's Assassin Caught in Germany! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 26 February 2026

The wheels of justice, albeit slowly, appear to be turning in the case of Andrey Portnov's assassination. Spanish police, working in concert with German authorities, have apprehended a suspect believed to be the gunman responsible for the brazen 2025 murder of the former Ukrainian presidential advisor. The arrest took place in Heinsberg, a town in western Germany near the Dutch border. I recall first hearing about Portnov's killing – it was a chilling event, especially given the circumstances and his high-profile background.

Ex-Ukrainian Advisor's Assassin Caught in Germany!...

Details remain somewhat scarce, but the Spanish National Police announced the arrest, stating that the suspect was collared by their Grupo 5 de Homicidios (Homicide Group Unit) with the assistance of Germany’s BKA special operations forces. A European Arrest Warrant and a European Investigation Order were instrumental in facilitating both the arrest and a subsequent search of the suspect's residence in Heinsberg. The identity of the individual in custody has not yet been made public, which, honestly, is standard procedure in these types of ongoing investigations. Law enforcement likely wants to avoid tipping off any potential accomplices or compromising the case.

For those who may not remember, Andrey Portnov, 53, was fatally shot on May 21, 2025, right outside a school in Pozuelo de Alarcon, an affluent suburb of Madrid. He had just dropped off his children, making the act even more appalling. Eye-witness accounts described a lone gunman approaching Portnov's Mercedes and opening fire, with at least one shot reportedly hitting him in the head. The gunman then allegedly fled the scene, supposedly aided by accomplices. "The investigation carried out to date suggests that the arrested suspect would be the person who fired the shots," Spanish police said in their statement. So, it looks like they are pretty confident.

Portnov was a complex figure, to say the least. A lawyer and political operator, his career mirrored the ups and downs of Ukrainian politics. He held a significant position as deputy head of the presidential administration under Viktor Yanukovich, playing a role in judicial reforms before the 2014 Maidan revolution that ousted Yanukovich. He had a complicated relationship with pretty much everyone in Ukrainian politics it seems. He fled to Austria and Russia before eventually returning to Ukraine in 2019 after Zelensky's election. He initially supported Zelensky but later became a critic. It's worth remembering that the US sanctioned Portnov in 2021 for alleged corruption, and the EU followed suit. It’s a tangled web, and unraveling the motive behind his assassination will likely be a long and intricate process.
