Okay, folks, buckle up, because the hype train for "Mortal Kombat II" just left the station! At IGN Fan Fest 2026, none other than Karl Urban himself dropped the latest trailer, and let me tell you, it's a doozy. I've been a "Mortal Kombat" fan since the arcade days, so trust me, this is exciting.
Mortal Kombat II Trailer SHOCKS Fans! What Will th...
The trailer, as you might expect, is packed with brutal action. What's really intriguing, though, is the state we find Johnny Cage in. Urban's character seems…down. The trailer opens with Cage looking completely out of place at a fan convention. Apparently, his career has tanked, and he's a far cry from the cocky, confident movie star we know and love from the games. It's an interesting departure, and honestly, I'm here for it.
Urban himself actually gave us a taste of this back at New York Comic Con 2025 last October. He described Cage as "a very dispirited character" whose martial arts training has lapsed and who's largely been forgotten by the world. "He has very little of that brash, cocky Johnny Cage you know from the games. He’s a broken man…" he explained. So, this trailer basically confirms all of that. It's a bold move to start with a character so low, but it definitely makes the eventual transformation all the more compelling.
But don't worry, it sounds like the classic Johnny Cage swagger is still in there somewhere. Urban promises that "through the course of the movie, we get to see him transform into a true champion of Earthrealm and involuntarily get launched into this insane action epic adventure." He even added, "It’ll blow your minds, man." If Karl Urban says it'll blow our minds, I'm inclined to believe him.
Simon McQuoid is back in the director's chair, and Jeremy Slater (who wrote "Death Note" and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire") is handling the story. Sounds like a solid team, right? The film is slated for a May 8 theatrical release, so mark your calendars, "Mortal Kombat" fans! And get this – a third film is already in development, which they announced at NYCC. Clearly, Warner Bros. has a lot of faith in this franchise.
Of course, this whole reveal is part of IGN's Fan Fest 2026, so make sure you check out the full schedule for even more news and updates from the world of entertainment and gaming. Rachel Weber (the Head of Editorial Development at IGN) even threw in a handy link to a "Mortal Kombat" character and lore guide. Always good to brush up on your fatalities!
All in all, this "Mortal Kombat II" trailer has me incredibly hyped. The darker take on Johnny Cage, the promise of insane action, and the fact that a third film is already in the works – it all points to a bright future for this franchise. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go practice my fatalities.
