Amazon Pulls Plug on Ambitious Driving Game: What Went Wrong?!
Gaming News 25 February 2026

Well, this is a bit of a surprise. Amazon, after initially backing the ambitious open-world racer from Maverick Games, has decided to pull the plug on their publishing agreement. For those unfamiliar, Maverick Games is a UK-based studio formed by a bunch of ex-Forza Horizon bigwigs, so expectations were already pretty high for this project. Now, they're back on the hunt for a new publishing partner.

Amazon Pulls Plug on Ambitious Driving Game: What ...

Amazon's statement, released to The Games Business, offers the usual corporate jargon about "strategic evolution" and focusing on "unique strengths and scale." Honestly, it reads like a polite way of saying "we're not feeling this anymore." They've also recently shut down their user-generated content dungeon crawler, King of Meat, after a mere six months, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their long-term commitment to every single project they greenlight.

To be fair, Amazon's got a lot on its plate. The company is pushing hard on its Luna cloud gaming service, and they've got that Tomb Raider deal with Crystal Dynamics that they're clearly prioritizing. Maybe this Maverick Games title just didn't fit into their grand scheme anymore. They did emphasize that they respect the Maverick Games team and what they're building, calling it a "compelling narrative-led driving experience." It's clear that they are attempting to let them down gently.

Founded back in 2022, Maverick Games quickly gained traction with industry veterans eager to see what the Forza Horizon alumni would create. Securing a publishing deal with Amazon Games in 2024 seemed like a huge win. We're talking a triple-A title, open-world, narrative-focused, and targeting PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. This was a serious project! The departure of former Amazon Games VP Christoph Hartmann, who championed Maverick's vision, earlier this year (as reported by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier) probably didn't help matters.

So, what's next for Maverick Games? Well, they're free to find a publisher whose "strategic priorities align better." That's marketing speak for "someone who actually believes in the game and is willing to put serious money behind it." Given the talent involved and the initial buzz around the project, I'm confident they'll find a new home. It’s always a bit of a gamble when a new studio is trying to make a splash in the industry. However, for now, fans will have to wait a little longer to see what the future holds for this promising driving game. It's a tough industry, but I'm rooting for them!
