INDIANAPOLIS — The buzz around Fernando Mendoza is reaching fever pitch here at the NFL Combine. While he might not be the prototypical physical specimen you usually see at the top of draft boards, NFL scouts and front office personnel are practically falling over themselves to praise the Indiana quarterback's intangibles. The phrase I keep hearing is "clutch," and it's becoming clear Mendoza's poise and ability to deliver when the chips are down are what's driving the hype surrounding his potential as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Fernando Mendoza's NFL Draft Hopes: Scouts Reveal ...
One NFL scout I spoke with emphasized Mendoza's complete skillset, but kept coming back to his composure. "He has poise in the pocket to stand and deliver," the scout told me, adding, "plus the mental aspect is huge. He’s got all the NFL traits, none really that elite, but all together a very formidable package." It's that "formidable package" that seems to be winning people over. It's not about having one overpowering attribute; it's about consistently making the right decisions under pressure.
League sources have been whispering about Mendoza's toughness throughout the Hoosiers' undefeated season, which, let's be honest, was something special to watch. That season, capped off with a Heisman Trophy win for the 6-foot-5 quarterback, clearly cemented his status. "His best trait is his mind," one NFL personnel executive told me flatly. "He’s a pocket QB with quick eyes and a quick release. He processes coverage and pressure at a high rate. Good arm strength and excellent accuracy. He’s tough and shows poise in high-stress situations. Excellent make-up. NFL starter." High praise indeed.
FOX Sports draft analyst Rob Rang echoed these sentiments, noting the pressure Mendoza was under this past season. Rang drew an interesting parallel between Mendoza and Sam Darnold, a guy who entered the league with massive expectations only to face intense scrutiny. "There were many critics ready to pounce [on Mendoza’s failings]," Rang explained. "It’s actually very similar to what Sam Darnold and the Seahawks just experienced... It’s the same thing with Mendoza. If he would’ve lost any game, then it would have been that, ‘He can’t win the big game.’ But he was so accurate, especially in the red zone and in high-pressure situations... Mendoza’s poise and precision stood out."
Rang went on to suggest that Mendoza's playing style is comparable to quarterbacks like Jared Goff, Matt Ryan, Daniel Jones, and even Matt Hasselbeck – all guys known for their smarts and accuracy more than their arm strength. It's a cerebral approach to the game, and it seems to be what teams are valuing more and more these days.
With the Las Vegas Raiders potentially holding the No. 1 overall pick, the speculation is that they'll take Mendoza. Rang believes he would be a perfect fit for new Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak’s classic West Coast offense, given his mobility, decision-making, and ability to read defenses. It's a system that rewards quick thinking and accuracy, two things Mendoza seems to have in spades. NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah put it simply: Mendoza's toughness, more than any physical attribute, is his greatest asset. "If you go through and look at all of these great quarterbacks over the years, I’ve always harped on poise being a big part of it," Jeremiah said. And that, ultimately, might be what separates Mendoza from the rest of the pack.
