President Trump is slated to deliver his State of the Union address tonight, but the atmosphere surrounding it is anything but unified. New polls show widespread disapproval of his handling of, well, almost everything – inflation, tariffs, foreign relations, immigration, you name it. The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll paints a pretty stark picture, and you can bet the White House is taking notice.
Trump's SOTU: Will He Unite or Divide a Nation on ...
This speech is a massive opportunity for Trump. With the midterm elections looming in November, and control of Congress hanging precariously in the balance, he needs to rally his base and sway undecided voters. It’s a high-stakes moment, to say the least. I've covered these events for years, and the tension in the air is palpable. Everyone’s waiting to see what cards he plays.
But here’s where things get even more interesting: Dozens of Democrats are planning to boycott the address altogether. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark is leading the charge, making her the highest-ranking House Democrat to publicly announce she’ll be skipping the event. "What we have seen from this president is a series of lies, of disrespect for the American people," she told ABC News. Strong words, indeed. It's a pretty stark statement about the level of division in Washington right now.
On the other side of the aisle, Republican Conference Secretary Lisa McClain is previewing a message focused on economic progress, tax cuts, and affordability. She emphasized the huge political stakes, saying that any time Trump speaks, it’s "very, very crucial." The Republican strategy seems to be emphasizing common-sense solutions to economic problems, but whether that message resonates with voters remains to be seen.
Adding to the drama, the Senate just failed to advance a procedural motion to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – again. This partial government shutdown is dragging on, now in its eleventh day, and it’s a real mess. The lack of compromise is frankly pretty disheartening. It's hard to ignore the irony of discussing the State of the Union when parts of the government are effectively closed.
Even the First Lady is getting in on the act, using her guests at the State of the Union to highlight her work with foster youth. "Sierra and Everest embody my ongoing mission to uplift America’s foster youth and expand opportunity for our next generation through education and technology," Melania Trump said in a statement. A worthy cause, certainly, but it also adds another layer of complexity to an already charged evening. It will be interesting to see how the President navigates all of these conflicting issues in his address tonight. Stay tuned.
