Tensions are ratcheting up again, this time with Russia's foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, alleging that the UK and France are secretly plotting to hand over nuclear weapons to Ukraine. The claim, which surfaced Tuesday, is already being blasted as pure fabrication by both Kyiv and Paris, with one official calling it "an outright lie" and another simply "absurd." It's the kind of accusation that really makes you take pause, though, regardless of how likely it is.
N-Weapons to Ukraine?! Shocking Claims Rock UK & F...
The timing is, shall we say, interesting. The SVR report landed on the fifth anniversary of Moscow's military operations in Ukraine. Notably, the agency offered absolutely zero supporting evidence for this rather explosive allegation. You'd think if you were accusing two major world powers of violating international law on such a grand scale, you might have, you know, something to back it up. But no.
According to the SVR statement, the British and French are supposedly aware that this plan would be a "gross violation" of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), essentially setting the world on a path to nuclear chaos. "The Westerners' main efforts are focused on making Kyiv's possession of a nuclear weapon look like it was developed by Ukrainians themselves," the SVR stated. It's a classic disinformation tactic: pre-emptively blame the other side for something you might be planning yourself, or at least use it to justify your own actions.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, predictably, seized on the report, emphasizing that a non-nuclear Ukraine is a key condition for resolving the conflict. "Undoubtedly, this information about Paris and London's intention to arm Kyiv with a nuclear bomb is extremely important," Peskov said. "We will certainly take this information into account during the ongoing negotiations." I mean, come on. The "ongoing negotiations" he's referring to? Apparently, the next round, mediated by the US, is supposed to take place in Geneva on February 27th. Talk about setting the stage.
Predictably, the French embassy in Moscow was quick to dismiss the claims as "an outright lie." As of this writing, there's been no official statement from Britain, though I expect one is forthcoming. Ukraine, for its part, didn't mince words. Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian foreign ministry, called the report "absurd," adding that Russian officials are "known for their impressive record of lies." He also referenced the old "dirty bomb" narrative that Russia has been pushing for a while now, a narrative thoroughly debunked by pretty much everyone.
"For the record: Ukraine has already denied such absurd Russian claims many times before, and we officially deny them again now. We urge the international community to reject and condemn Russia's dirty information bombs," Tykhyi said. It's a tense situation, to say the least. Whether this is just more Russian propaganda or something more sinister remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: the information war is as hot as the actual conflict on the ground.
