Mazda's V6 Miata Dream? Turns Out, It Already Happened... And Died.
Mazda Miata V6 Dream CRUSHED! What Went WRONG?!
The Mazda MX-5 Miata. A name synonymous with pure driving joy, lightweight handling, and that perfectly balanced feel. For decades, it's been the poster child for affordable, fun sports cars, typically powered by a responsive, but never overly aggressive, four-cylinder engine. But what if, just what if, someone decided to shoehorn a V6 into that tiny frame? Well, apparently, someone already tried.
According to Christian Schultze, the head of European Research and Development at Mazda, a clandestine project involving a V6-powered Miata existed almost two decades ago. He revealed this juicy tidbit to Dutch magazine AutoRAI. Can you imagine the sound? The power? It's enough to make any Miata enthusiast salivate.
Now, before you rush out to find a V6 Miata that never officially existed, there's a catch (or several). This wasn't an officially sanctioned project blessed by Mazda brass. Instead, Schultze explained, it was a skunkworks operation, a passion project undertaken by Japanese engineers in their off-hours. Think of it as the automotive equivalent of tinkering in the garage, but with the resources (and presumably, some hidden parts) of a major car manufacturer.
The engine in question? A 2.5-liter V6. Sounds potent, right? The problem, apparently, was the sheer size and weight of the thing. Schultze didn't specify which generation of Miata served as the guinea pig (my money's on the NC, given the timeline), but it seems the engine simply didn't play nice with the Miata's svelte dimensions. Imagine trying to fit a size 12 foot into a size 8 shoe. Not a pretty picture.
The visual shortcomings were apparently a major factor in the project's ultimate demise. The engine bay became overcrowded, and the overall aesthetic was compromised, according to Schultze. More importantly, the heavier engine likely threw off the Miata's legendary 50:50 weight distribution, potentially turning a nimble dancer into a bit of a clumsy lout. That perfect balance is what makes the Miata so engaging to drive.
While the V6 Miata never saw the light of day, it's fascinating to know that Mazda engineers explored this avenue. The idea of a more powerful Miata is certainly tempting, even if it comes with compromises. Perhaps in the future, with advancements in engine technology and materials, a V6 Miata (or maybe even a turbocharged four-cylinder with similar power) could become a reality. For now, we can only dream... and maybe scour the internet for blurry photos of this mythical beast.
