Market Chaos! Stocks Plunge: What Will Happen Next...

Yesterday's session closed on a high note, with the BIST 100 gaining 0.92% to reach 14,061.71 points. Today's dip sees the index shedding 50.52 points compared to that closing figure. It’s a fairly modest decline, to be fair, but still indicates a shift in momentum, at least in the early hours.

Looking at sector performance, the banking index is currently down 0.40%, while holding companies are experiencing a more significant decline of 1.63%. On the brighter side, tourism is leading the charge with a gain of 0.84%. It's a mixed bag, reflecting the various factors influencing the market right now.

Globally, it's a similar story of mixed sentiment. A lot of the uncertainty seems to be stemming from concerns about U.S. President Trump's aggressive trade policies and those lingering anxieties surrounding the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. That tariff situation in the U.S. continues to cast a long shadow. Trump's recent statement about potentially hiking rates even higher for countries perceived as "playing games" regarding the Supreme Court's tariff decisions has certainly added fuel to the fire.

On the geopolitical front, the indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. in Oman have wrapped up. Deputy Foreign Minister Garibabadi's assurance that Iran isn't pursuing nuclear weapons did offer some temporary relief, easing some fears of a potential military clash. Still, underlying tensions remain, and geopolitical events always have the potential to send ripples through global markets, so it's definitely something to keep an eye on.

Looking ahead, analysts are pointing to a busy domestic agenda, including the household expectations survey, sectoral inflation expectations, and data on the foreign exchange assets and liabilities of non-financial firms. Internationally, the U.S. housing price index and speeches from BoE Governor Bailey and ECB President Lagarde will be closely watched. It's a data-rich day, that's for sure!

From a technical perspective, analysts are highlighting key support levels for the BIST 100 at 13,900 and 13,800 points, while resistance levels are identified at 14,200 and 14,300 points. As always, keep in mind that market movements are inherently unpredictable, and these levels are simply guidelines. We'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they develop.
