James Bond is getting a serious upgrade. Forget just stealth and gadgets; in IO Interactive's upcoming 007: First Light, Bond is going to be throwing down, brawling with the best of them. This marks a clear shift from the Hitman series, where all-out combat was generally something to avoid. It seems like this time around, 007 is embracing his inner action hero.
007 Game SHOCK: Arkham & Uncharted COMBINED?! You ...
And when I say "action hero," I really mean it. IO Interactive isn't just slapping together some basic fight mechanics. They're taking inspiration from some of the biggest names in action gaming. Think Batman: Arkham’s incredibly satisfying "freeflow" combat and the bombastic, over-the-top action sequences of the Uncharted games. It's a pretty ambitious goal, honestly, but if anyone can pull it off, it might just be IO.
According to Gameplay Director Andreas Krogh, the team is meticulously studying what makes those combat systems so engaging. "What are our references here? What are the other games that do this well, on the same scale and the same kind of scope as this game? Obviously, we have some references there in the approach to close combat," Krogh told Game Informer. "I think you see the Arkham games, you see those games in it. You also see some modern takes on destructibility in the environment that are not necessarily from the Arkham games, but newer takes like Uncharted."
It sounds like they aren’t just copying these games, which is crucial. Krogh emphasized that they’re aiming for a "deeper system" to really deliver on the Bond fantasy. This probably means more environmental interactions, maybe more strategic options in fights, and hopefully a good dose of Bond-style gadgets integrated into the combat. I’m personally hoping to see some creative uses of his iconic Walther PPK in close-quarters scenarios.
So, what does this all mean? Well, we can probably expect a Bond game that's a lot more… kinetic than previous iterations. A game where you can seamlessly transition from stealth to all-out action, using your wits and your fists (and maybe a well-placed exploding pen) to take down your enemies. It will be interesting to see what "modern takes on destructibility" will be, but the reference to Uncharted is exciting. I am definitely ready for some incredible environmental destruction.
Of course, we still have a long wait ahead of us. IO Interactive is playing their cards close to their chest, but this early information is definitely promising. If they manage to successfully blend the stealth of Hitman with the action of Arkham and the spectacle of Uncharted, 007: First Light could be something truly special.
