Lamborghini Ditches Electric Dream! What SHOCKED Them Into Reverse?
Automotive 23 February 2026

Lamborghini, the name synonymous with roaring engines and breathtaking speed, is pumping the brakes on its all-electric vehicle ambitions. Forget silent supercars – at least for now. The Italian icon has decided to shelve plans for a fully electric model, opting instead for a future paved with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

Lamborghini Ditches Electric Dream! What SHOCKED T...

Remember the Lanzador? That sleek, all-electric concept Lamborghini unveiled with such fanfare in 2023? Well, it's not going to see the light of day, at least not in its pure EV form. The reason? Apparently, the very people who buy Lamborghinis aren’t exactly clamoring for battery power.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann didn't mince words. He stated that the enthusiasm for electric vehicles among Lamborghini's clientele was "close to zero." Ouch. According to Winkelmann, diving headfirst into a fully electric vehicle program risked becoming a "costly hobby" – a financial drain that wouldn't sit well with shareholders, customers, or employees.

So, what's the plan? The Lanzador will be reborn as a plug-in hybrid, and Lamborghini aims to have a fully plug-in hybrid lineup by 2030. But perhaps the most surprising part of this announcement is the commitment to keeping internal combustion engines alive "for as long as possible." It seems the allure of that classic Lamborghini growl is too strong to ignore.

Let's be honest, it's not entirely shocking. Lamborghini, owned by the Volkswagen Group through Audi, thrives on delivering a visceral, emotional experience. As Winkelmann himself pointed out, sports car aficionados struggle to form that "special emotional connection" with electric vehicles. The missing auditory component – that glorious engine note – is a significant factor. I can understand that. There's something fundamentally different about the raw power and sound of a Lamborghini compared to the refined silence of an EV. It's part of the brand's DNA.

Winkelmann argues that plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds: the agility and instant torque of electric battery technology combined with the emotion and power delivery of a traditional combustion engine. It's a compromise, sure, but perhaps a necessary one to keep Lamborghini relevant while staying true to its heritage.

This decision represents a pretty significant shift, though. Back in 2021, Lamborghini pledged to produce only hybrid electric supercars by 2024 and earmarked €1.5 billion for hybrid and fully electric vehicle development. Now, the focus is firmly back on hybrids, and the fully electric future is looking a lot further off. Time will tell if this calculated pivot pays off, or if Lamborghini will eventually have to fully embrace the electric revolution, whether its customers are ready or not.
