Audible Shocker: Content King Crowned After Wondery Deal - What's Next?!

Audible is making some big moves in its North American content strategy. The Amazon-owned audio behemoth just announced that Marshall Lewy, a seasoned audio executive formerly with Wondery, will be taking the helm as Head of Content for North America. This is a significant appointment, and it signals Audible's continued commitment to original, high-quality programming.

Audible Shocker: Content King Crowned After Wonder...

Lewy will be reporting directly to Chief Content Officer Rachel Ghiazza, which puts him in a key position to influence the direction of Audible's creative output. Let's be honest, the competition in the audio space is fierce. Spotify is constantly nipping at their heels, and other players are emerging all the time. So, getting the right person to curate and greenlight content is crucial.

What makes Lewy such a compelling choice? Well, his track record speaks for itself. As Chief Content Officer at Wondery, he was the driving force behind some seriously successful podcasts – think "Hysterical," "Dr. Death," "Business Wars," and even "Baby, This Is Keke Palmer." What’s particularly impressive is that many of these weren't just audio hits, they crossed over into other media. "Dr. Death," for instance, became a very popular series on Peacock. And that's the kind of cross-platform potential Audible is undoubtedly looking for.

Beyond podcasts, Lewy has a deep understanding of television and film production. He's an executive producer on seven television series, including "The Shrink Next Door" and "WeCrashed," both on Apple TV+. He even has an Emmy nomination under his belt for FX's "Dying for Sex." This broad experience means he's not just thinking about audio in a vacuum; he's thinking about how these stories can resonate across different formats and reach wider audiences. To me, that’s increasingly important in today’s fragmented media landscape.

This move comes after last August's reorganization following Audible's integration of Wondery, which saw Wondery CEO Jen Sargent depart. It seems Audible is solidifying its strategy, placing a proven content creator at the forefront. Before Wondery, Lewy was a partner at Adaptive Studios, even working on the revival of "Project Greenlight" on HBO. He's also an accomplished independent filmmaker, having written and directed films that have premiered at Sundance. In short, this guy has seen it all. He’s a content chameleon, adapting and thriving in different creative environments. Audible seems to have landed a strong player, and I’m personally keen to see what he cooks up for them.
