Okay, BioShock fans, buckle up. It sounds like we might be getting a double dose of Rapture (or maybe Columbia?) in the not-too-distant future. According to producer Roy Lee, Take-Two, the publisher behind the BioShock games, is keen on timing the release of the long-awaited BioShock movie with... something new in the game franchise. Color me intrigued.
BioShock Movie MIRRORING New Game?! Take-Two's SHO...
In an interview with Collider, Lee dropped the hint that Netflix and Take-Two are "very anxious to see the movie come out because they want to have the release coincide with some of the potential new incarnations of the game." "Incarnations," plural, eh? That could mean a full-fledged BioShock 4 (which we know is in development), a remaster of the older games, or even something totally unexpected. My money is on a new game plus a shiny remaster to whet our appetites.
The BioShock movie has been kicking around for what feels like forever. We're talking multiple directors attached and then detaching, budget woes, and the general Hollywood development hell. Francis Lawrence (of *Hunger Games* fame) is still attached to direct, but he's currently tied up with *Sunrise on the Reaping*. Lee says they're waiting for him to finish post-production, hopefully aiming to get into production next year. "It's steadily on the path, but you know how it goes," Lee admitted. "So many things could get in the way..." He's not wrong. I’ve seen projects stuck in development limbo for years, never to see the light of day.
The tricky part is, adapting BioShock is no easy feat. It’s not just a shooter; it's a story-rich, philosophically engaging experience with some seriously creepy atmosphere. Gore Verbinski's attempt years ago fell through, and you can see why. Getting the tone right is crucial. But it sounds like they're taking the time needed to hopefully do it justice.
And what about BioShock 4? We know it's been in the works for a long time, allegedly nearly a decade. After some turmoil, including layoffs and delays, Rod Fergusson, a veteran of Gears of War and Diablo, is now overseeing the project at Cloud Chamber. That's a promising sign, bringing in someone with experience handling big franchises. Whether it's a direct sequel, a prequel, or something completely different remains a mystery. But the prospect of diving back into a new BioShock world, coupled with a potentially awesome movie adaptation, is enough to get any fan excited. Now, if they can just stick to the plan...
