Mexico on Edge: El Mencho Down! What Happens Next Will Shock You!
Current Affairs 23 February 2026

Mexico is on high alert this week as a wave of violence grips the nation, sparked by unconfirmed reports of the death of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). I've been following this story closely, and the sheer scale of the reported violence is deeply concerning. It’s a stark reminder of the power these cartels wield.

Mexico on Edge: El Mencho Down! What Happens Next ...

A dozen Mexican states suspended classes on Monday, a drastic measure reflecting the severity of the situation. The alleged demise of El Mencho during a Mexican Army operation in the mountains of Jalisco on Sunday has apparently unleashed a fury of activity by the CJNG. You can only imagine what's going on behind the scenes.

Beyond the school closures, governors across the country are scrambling, urgently convening security cabinets to try and regain control. The national trucking association has even advised its drivers to seek safe harbor, which speaks volumes about the dangers on the roads right now. The United States has also issued a stern warning to its citizens in nearly a third of the country, urging them to stay indoors.

Jalisco, the CJNG's stronghold, is understandably the epicenter of the tension. The governor has suspended public transportation and even measles vaccination campaigns, a heartbreaking decision considering the public health implications. Reports are flooding in of bank arsons, an estimated 20 already, and vehicles being burned and abandoned by criminal groups in an attempt to impede authorities. The violence is not contained to Jalisco either; it's reportedly bleeding into at least five other states.

"I’m watching the scenes of violence from Mexico with great sadness and concern. It’s not surprising that the bad guys are responding with terror. But we must never lose our nerve," posted Christopher Landau, the former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, on X. Landau's experience provides valuable insight into the complexities of this situation.

The U.S. State Department has issued specific alerts advising citizens to seek shelter in several popular tourist destinations, including Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and Cancún. Similar warnings have been issued for areas in Baja California, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. It really underlines the scope of the potential danger, doesn't it?

The response hasn't been limited to the US. Numerous other countries, including France, Germany, Russia, India, and Spain, have also urged their citizens in Mexico to exercise extreme caution and stay indoors, which highlights the international impact of this crisis. Everyone is watching and holding their breath.

President Claudia Sheinbaum attempted to reassure the public with a statement on social media, emphasizing that "in most of the national territory activities are happening with absolute normalcy." She also stressed "complete coordination" with state governments, urging people to "stay informed and remain calm." However, judging by the widespread school closures and travel warnings, it is clear that this situation is more serious than 'normal'.

The DEA describes the CJNG as a global operation with tens of thousands of members, associates, and facilitators in at least 40 countries. The United States, however, has not officially confirmed El Mencho's death, but welcomed reports of the operation. This situation is still unfolding, and we'll continue to provide updates as they become available.
