The world of thrillers and mysteries is positively buzzing! From captivating audiobooks to stage revivals and hotly contested adaptation rights, there's something for every Crime fiction aficionado to get excited about. Let's dive into the latest happenings.
Thriller Adaptation Bidding War EXPLODES! What Hap...
First up, we have the legendary Emma Thompson lending her considerable talents to the audiobook of Gisèle Pelicot’s memoir, *A Hymn to Life*. What a perfect pairing! Thompson herself seems genuinely moved by the story, describing it as one that "inspires courage and compassion, but also crucially demands change.” I'm personally a big fan of audiobooks, and with Thompson's narration, this one is sure to be a powerful and moving experience.
Switching gears to the stage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, best known for *Modern Family*, is taking on the iconic role of Truman Capote in a revival of Jay Presson Allen’s *Tru*. The play, running in New York from March 6th to April 12th, offers an intimate glimpse into Capote's life during a particularly challenging period. It's set in 1975, when he's grappling with the fallout from a scandal that cost him many of his socialite friends. Ferguson is a fantastic actor, so I have high hopes for this production. It’s a chance to see a complex, often misunderstood figure brought to life on stage.
Now, for the news that really set tongues wagging: Clare Mackintosh, the author behind *The Last Party* and *I Let You Go*, has sparked a major bidding war for the adaptation rights to her upcoming thriller, *It’s Not What You Think*. Red Planet Pictures ultimately came out on top, with Kam Odedra signed on to write the TV adaptation. This is a testament to Mackintosh's talent for crafting suspenseful and gripping stories. I’ve enjoyed her previous books, so I’m eager to see what *It's Not What You Think* has in store, and even more excited to see it brought to life on screen.
And finally, Colin Firth is heading to Berlin! He’s joined the cast of the Apple TV adaptation of Philip Kerr’s *Metropolis*, the 14th novel in the Bernie Gunther series. Firth will play Paul Lohser, a murder detective in 1920s Berlin, while Jack Lowden will take on the role of Bernie Gunther. A serial killer is terrorizing the city, and Gunther has just been promoted to the Murder Squad. This adaptation sounds incredibly atmospheric, and with Firth and Lowden leading the cast, it's definitely one to watch. If you're new to the Bernie Gunther series, *March Violets* is a great place to start.
On a slightly different note, I stumbled across a piece from Jonathan Forney that I found incredibly insightful. He argues that "Scooby-Doo is not about a group of teenagers and their talking dog stopping costumed weirdos. It’s asking audiences to imagine what kinds of problems we can solve if we work together." It's a nice reminder that even seemingly simple stories can hold profound truths.
That's all for now, folks! Keep your eyes peeled for more updates from the thrilling world of crime and mystery. And don't forget to subscribe for regular doses of bookish news delivered straight to your inbox.
