MEXICO CITY – The alleged death of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, the head honcho of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a military raid this past Sunday has unleashed a furious storm of violence across Mexico. It's the kind of chaos we've, unfortunately, come to expect, but the scale this time feels different.
El Mencho DEAD?! US-Backed Raid SHOCKS Mexico - Wh...
President Claudia Sheinbaum has been under intense pressure lately, particularly from Washington, to really crack down on these cartels. The focus is squarely on the flow of fentanyl into the United States. This raid seems to be a direct response to that pressure, though Sheinbaum's office is playing it close to the vest regarding direct US involvement.
According to the Mexican defense ministry, Oseguera, who was 60, died after sustaining injuries during the operation conducted by Mexican special forces in Tapalpa, Jalisco. His body was transported to Mexico City under a heavy National Guard escort. You can just imagine the tension in the air – everyone knowing the potential for retaliation.
Reuters initially reported that a newly formed US military task force played a role, which was later semi-confirmed by the White House. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged that the US provided intelligence support. She even went so far as to commend the Mexican military for their "cooperation and successful execution" of the operation. Seems like someone's trying to take a little credit, doesn't it?
And retaliate they did. Reports of El Mencho's death were quickly followed by cartel members blockading highways with burning vehicles. Businesses were torched in several states, effectively bringing parts of the country to a standstill. Thankfully, as of now, there are no reports of civilian fatalities, but the damage is extensive.
I've been hearing firsthand accounts from people in Puerto Vallarta – usually a peaceful beach resort. They describe it as a "war zone." Pictures and videos online show thick plumes of smoke filling the sky. It's absolutely terrifying for tourists and locals alike. Several airlines, including Air Canada, United, Aeromexico, and American, have suspended flights to the area. It's a nightmare situation for everyone involved.
El Mencho's story is a dark one. He was a former police officer who rose through the ranks to build the CJNG. They’ve become one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels, notorious for their brutality and expanding criminal activities. They aren't just about drugs anymore; they're involved in fuel theft, extortion, human smuggling, and financial fraud. They were even early adopters of drone technology for attacks, a chilling demonstration of their ruthlessness.
This raid is undoubtedly a major victory for the Mexican government, but it's far from over. The power vacuum left by El Mencho's death will likely lead to more violence as rival factions and other cartels vie for control. The fight continues, and unfortunately, the people of Mexico are caught in the crossfire.
