Red Star Belgrade cruised to a decisive 3-0 victory against bitter rivals Partizan in a Serbian Super League derby that, sadly, wasn't just about the football. The match, a clash of titans in Serbian football, unfolded at Red Star's home ground, the Rajko Mitic Stadium, but the on-field action was constantly battling for attention with disturbances in the stands.
Red Star Demolishes Partizan in Fiery Derby! What ...
The scoreline, frankly, doesn’t fully convey the intensity of the game, or the atmosphere, which oscillated between electric and outright dangerous. Red Star managed to break the deadlock right at the end of the first half, with Vasilije Kostov finding the net in the 45+5th minute. That late goal seemed to deflate Partizan, because coming out after the break, Red Star absolutely took control.
Marko Arnautovic, a name familiar to many football fans beyond Serbia, extended Red Star's lead in the 56th minute, and then Aleksandar Katai effectively slammed the door shut with a goal in the 77th minute. Honestly, by that point, the game felt done and dusted. Red Star were simply the better team on the day, playing with a confidence and swagger that Partizan just couldn’t match.
However, the game will also be remembered for the ugly scenes in the stands. Partisan fans, seemingly frustrated by their team's performance, ignited flares during the second half. I've seen it before, of course, but the sheer volume of smoke and flames was genuinely concerning. It actually caused some damage to the stadium seating. You had security personnel and fire crews scrambling to put out the fires. Play was temporarily suspended. It's a shame, really, because it mars what should be a celebration of Serbian football, regardless of which side you support.
So, what does this mean for the league? Well, with this victory, Red Star Belgrade solidify their position at the top of the table, now holding 57 points after 24 matches. Partizan remain in second place with 53 points. It’s still a tight race, of course, and there are plenty of games left to play. But Red Star have definitely sent a message with this win. They’re the team to beat. Let's just hope the remaining matches are decided on the pitch, and not in the stands.
