Mexico Violence: Is Your Family Safe? Urgent Warning for Canadians!
Current Affairs 22 February 2026

Canadians vacationing in Puerto Vallarta are facing an unexpected and frankly, frightening turn of events. Escalating violence in the Mexican state of Jalisco has triggered urgent warnings from Global Affairs Canada, advising citizens to shelter in place. It's a situation that's impacting travel plans and raising serious concerns about safety in a popular tourist destination.

The advisory, issued Sunday, paints a grim picture: "Criminal groups have set up roadblocks with burning vehicles in several cities in Jalisco State... There have been shootouts with security forces and explosions." That's not exactly the kind of relaxation people are looking for when they book a trip to paradise. The Canadian government is understandably urging extreme caution.

The impact on travel has been immediate and significant. Air Canada briefly halted flights to Puerto Vallarta's airport, and WestJet had to divert seven flights already en route. WestJet also made the tough call to cancel 24 flights to and from Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and Manzanillo. I can only imagine the frustration and anxiety that travelers are feeling right now. They've at least introduced a flexible change policy for those impacted, which is a welcome relief, however small.

For Canadians already on the ground, WestJet and Sunwing are working to arrange extended stays. That's good news, but being stuck in a hotel room while violence unfolds outside isn't anyone's idea of a good vacation. Let's hope these airlines are also working to ensure the safety and well-being of their stranded guests. They'll need it.

So what sparked this sudden eruption of violence? According to Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro, federal forces carried out an operation in Tapalpa early Sunday, which then spiraled into clashes with criminal elements. The Governor activated a "code red," describing the burning vehicles used as roadblocks to hamper authorities. Essentially, it's a battle for control, and unfortunately, tourists are caught in the middle.

The advice to Canadians couldn't be clearer: stay vigilant, follow local authorities' instructions, and keep up-to-date through media reports. In situations like this, accurate information is your best weapon. Let’s hope the situation de-escalates quickly and that everyone – both visitors and locals – can soon return to a sense of safety and normalcy. It's a stark reminder that even the most beautiful places can be vulnerable to unexpected danger.
