Jhon Duran, the Colombian striker who arrived at Fenerbahçe with considerable fanfare just a few months ago, finds himself once again on the move. This time, he's headed to Zenit St. Petersburg on loan, but the circumstances surrounding the transfer are… well, let's just say they're less than ideal.
Fenerbahçe's Nightmare Continues! Rejected AGAIN?!...
Duran's tenure with the Yellow Canaries was, in a word, underwhelming. Signed on loan from Al-Nassr at the start of the season, he was supposed to bolster Fenerbahçe's attacking options. Instead, his time in Istanbul was marred by injuries and whispers of problems off the pitch. It’s a shame, really, because the potential was clearly there.
The stark reality of the situation was laid bare by Russian player agent Dmitriy Selyuk, who, in no uncertain terms, suggested Fenerbahçe were practically begging to get rid of him. Speaking to Sport Day by Day, Selyuk stated, "Fenerbahçe got rid of him," leaving little room for interpretation. Ouch.
Selyuk went on to paint a rather unflattering picture of Duran's career trajectory. "Even though he performed very well in England, he has changed teams too often," he observed. And he’s right, it’s a bit of a whirlwind when you look at it. At just 22 years old, Duran has already played for six different clubs: Envigado, Chicago Fire, Aston Villa, Al-Nassr, Fenerbahçe, and now Zenit. It’s almost as if he can’t quite find a place to truly settle.
The agent continued, "The important thing here is whether he wants to recover and be at the level to play for top clubs again, or whether he will remain a player that no one wants after Zenit... In my opinion, Fenerbahçe got rid of him and they are praying to Zenit for saving them." Talk about a blunt assessment! While harsh, it raises a crucial question: can Duran turn things around in Russia, or is he destined to become a footballing journeyman?
Despite Al-Nassr’s reported €77 million investment in Duran for the 2024-25 season – a truly staggering figure – his current market value, according to Transfermarkt, is a "mere" €32 million. That's quite a drop. Only time will tell if Duran can recapture the form that once made him such a highly-rated prospect. For now, he has a point to prove, not just to Zenit, but to himself.
