Copenhagen – A U.S. submariner found themselves in need of urgent medical attention off the coast of Greenland this weekend, prompting a swift response from the Danish military. According to a statement released on Facebook by the Danish Joint Arctic Command, the crew member was successfully evacuated on Saturday from a location roughly 7 nautical miles (that's about 13 kilometers) outside of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.

The statement detailed how a Danish Seahawk helicopter, launched from a nearby inspection ship, was deployed to retrieve the ailing submariner. They were then transported to a hospital in Nuuk for immediate treatment. While the official announcement didn't specify the nature of the medical emergency, the prompt action suggests it was something quite serious.
Now, here's where things get a little… well, interesting. The timing of this medical evacuation coincided with a rather bold declaration from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Late Saturday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce plans to send a U.S. hospital ship to Greenland, alleging widespread illness and inadequate medical care on the island. I have to admit, seeing that pop up on my feed felt a bit surreal.
Trump, apparently working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, stated, "Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It’s on the way!!!" He even referred to Landry as his special envoy for Greenland, which raised a few eyebrows, to say the least.
Unsurprisingly, this announcement didn't sit too well with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. She took to Facebook on Sunday to defend Denmark's robust healthcare system. "I am happy to live in a country where there is free and equal access to health for all, where it’s not insurances and wealth that determine whether you get proper treatment," she wrote, pointedly. She further emphasized that Greenland operates under the same principles, adding a simple yet effective, "Happy Sunday to you all 😊."
The situation underscores the somewhat strained relationship between Denmark and the United States, particularly since Trump's previous interest in, shall we say, acquiring Greenland. While the two nations remain NATO allies, the idea of the U.S. essentially “parachuting in” with a hospital ship, especially on the heels of the submarine incident, adds a layer of complexity to the already delicate dynamic. One wonders what the long-term implications of this latest episode will be for the two countries.
