LOS ANGELES – Forget the Hollywood glitz, this was a soccer showdown! Son Heung-min, the South Korean sensation, stole the spotlight from Lionel Messi as Los Angeles FC cruised to a dominant 3-0 victory over Inter Miami in their MLS season opener. It was a clear message: the new season is here, and the old guard might have a fight on their hands. Let's be honest, the pre-game hype was all about Messi, but Son and LAFC had other plans.
Messi STUNNED! LAFC SHOCKS Miami in Season Opener ...
Son wasn’t just present; he orchestrated the LAFC attack, notably setting up David Martinez for the game's opening goal in the first half. Denis Bouanga and Nathan Ordaz added the insurance goals, but really, it was the energy and threat that Son brought, combined with Bouanga and Martinez, that consistently troubled the Miami defense. It was a masterclass in counter-attacking football.
The match, moved to the iconic Memorial Coliseum to accommodate the massive crowd – nearly 76,000 strong, making it the second-largest attendance in MLS history – felt like a spectacle. MLS Commissioner Don Garber even claimed they could have sold out LAFC's usual stadium five times over. That speaks volumes about the drawing power of Messi and the rising popularity of MLS. But sometimes, the best-laid plans… well, they don’t pan out.
Unfortunately for those eager to witness Messi magic, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had a quiet night. He failed to register a single shot on target, a rarity for a player of his caliber. Miami controlled possession, sure, but they lacked the cutting edge to break down a well-organized LAFC defense. "We prepared for the best Messi," LAFC coach Marc Dos Santos stated, “and when you prepare for the best Messi, you have to have numbers around him in the box." Seems their preparation paid off.
LAFC's strategy was clear: absorb the pressure and strike with lightning-fast counter-attacks. Bouanga, in particular, looked dangerous, and Son could have opened the scoring early on, but he pushed his shot just wide. It was a sign of things to come, though, that LAFC were going to make Miami pay for any mistakes.
Messi, perhaps still feeling the effects of a recent hamstring strain, seemed a step slow. He uncharacteristically lost possession several times, and as Miami's frustration grew, LAFC pounced. A turnover in midfield gifted the ball to Son, who found Martinez on the right. Martinez, given too much space, curled a beautiful shot into the far corner. A moment of brilliance, and LAFC were ahead.
Messi had a couple of chances – a shot from the edge of the box narrowly wide and another just over the bar in the second half – but he never quite looked like his usual self. There was also a concerning moment when he collided headfirst with Ryan Porteous and remained down for a minute. Thankfully, he was able to continue, but it was another sign that this wasn't going to be Miami's night.
